We probably saw the same guy. I saw this guy accusing a coin of being a scam, I checked his last posts, and his last 5 posts were from 5 different thread talking about how they were scams. That seemed to be the only thing he talked about, but worse than that is that his opinion was so worthless because he obviously didn't know anything. He seemed like a person who did not have any ability to speak or come up with anything to say, so claiming that everything was a scam did not require a lot of work. And perhaps itt made him feel as though he knew what he was talking about, or made him feel as though he knew better than the rest. I guess he was a highly insecure person, did not do to good in school, or anything that required thinking, and this made him feel more confident.

Do these senior members actually know what they're talking about or are they senior members simply because they back every post they see with the goal of gaining activity and merit?
No one can give an accurate answer, unless you provide their names.

I went through a history of one member and found that the majority of post they have been posting since they became a member were accusations of scams and trolling on the same threads.
You should report those (trolling is against the rules).

This leaves me thinking that the BTT ranking system encourages users to troll and create spam
No, read the following posts:
3. No trolling.
However, trolling isn't allowed. If a user is habitually posting obviously false nonsense ("obviously false nonsense" to an outsider, NOT to someone who follows or is involved in the discussion) just to stir up trouble, then it's considered trolling, which is prohibited. Such cases should be thoroughly documented in the report though (There are tons of reports that just say "trolling", but moderators don't have time to look through each user's post).

and that rank on BTT really doesn't mean anything in terms of someones credibility.
Correct, especially since there's the issue of "account sales".

The previous ranking system was like that. You just simply post once a day until you get enough activity for Senior Member or whatever rank your goal is. Thankfully we now have the Merit system[1], therefore the trolls and the people who doesn't post anything useful will be most likely stuck at the Jr member rank, as they would need merits to rank up from thereon.

After following a few threads and seeing regular senior members come to troll projects I started to get curious.  Do these senior members actually know what they're talking about or are they senior members simply because they back every post they see with the goal of gaining activity and merit?

That surely was the case few months ago. But with the implementation of merit systems, there is decrease in trolling or senseless posts as the posting is not the only requirement for a higher rank. We've started seeing a general rise in the quality of posts after the implementation of merit as requirement for rank rise.

Even if true... past requirements will never be fair with new requirements.. as with all things timing is everything and making up for time lost is the hardest of all things to make up... it will very likely be 10x harder to rank up in this forum than 1-2 years ago.. as will investing in cryptocurrency...investing or mining in 2016 or 2017 will be exponentially easier than now.  Even if some slid through with troll or lesser than average posts, that just won't get it done anymore and it shouldn't.. before the forums needed traffic and supporters to make it grow.. and now the forum is sustainable enough without any new users so they can be as picky as they want to be.. I'm in the same boat and its going to be tough.. but questioning fairness has never gotten me anywhere in life.. so I just try my best to win with the hand I was dealt.
