So that probably means that Ulbricht will stay behind bars for the rest of his life. Assange/Snowden still have some chance as there are enough mainstream politicians showing their sympathy towards them. Ulbricht's case is different and Trump was probably the only one who could have considered to pardon him. Feels bad, because he's in his 30s and unlike Assange or Snowden, people seems to have completely forgotten his case.

Assange and Snowden should both be pardoned. I think if you ask the public if they should be freed than most people would say yes. The general opinion of these two is that they did something good for all of us. They broke the law but not profit of it and rather do some good in the world.

Agree.

What a depressing day that must have been for him.

I guess his best bet now is that at some point in the next 50 years they decide to reevaluate those serving hard time for non violent crimes.

Ulbricht, Assange, Snowden - no.

I wanted him to pardon all three, but I was honestly surprised that he didn't pardon Assange.  The way Trump berated the "fake news" media and the DC "swamp" for the last 4 years I suspected he would issue that pardon for no other reason than to slap them in the face with it.  Not to mention that I believe Assange is one of the few honest, unflinching journalists around who is a victim of the powerful elites he exposed.

As for Ulbricht, I'm not convinced that he didn't try to hire an assassin.  The evidence seems to suggest that he tried and got scammed into believing he was successful.  That doesn't make things any better, but at the same time, I think the sentence was on the harsh side given the evidence used to convict him.

Snowden was another that didn't surprise me.  Although I despise what he did, I despise what our government was doing more.  For that I wished for his pardon.  Compare his case to that Chelsea Manning, and it seems like "justice" is just a word used by politicians to bolster their own political ambitions.

The other one I wanted him to consider was McAfee, but no one even mentioned him.  Not surprising, the establishment sees tax evasion as by far the most heinous of all crimes.

Yeah, I'm from the Detroit area and am still dumbfounded at how many folks here feel that Kwame Kilpatrick did no wrong and was unfairly punished. The guy is/was as corrupt of a politician as they come...  Roll Eyes

I'm from Long Island New York. You people are total amateurs when it comes to corrupt public officials.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ed_Mangano

https://www.newsday.com/long-island/crime/burke-beating-sentence-1.29630759

https://projects.newsday.com/long-island/politics-corruption-long-island-2/

But, looking at what is out there on Kilpatrick he was just as corrupt as others out here.

OT a bit but, I would like to see the laws changed a but for public officials convicted of corruption to be changed that all restitution must be paid back to the municipality at 20x damages.
Want to give a contract to your friend at 2x the going rate. Fine. Get caught, no jail you just owe 40x what it was.
Make them think about it. If they can skim a few million and know all they are going to get is a few years in jail and possibly have to pay some of it back, they might do it. Pay 20x back...probably going to force them to think about it a bit more.

Steve Bannon
Bannon was accused of defrauding Trump's supporters by promising to use money from Trump's supporters to help fulfill Trump's primary campaign promise. Bannon has not had his case heard in court yet, but the pardon was not a good look for Trump. I think this pardon is a sign that Trump is not going to run for President again.

I never expected Trump to follow through on pardoning Snowden though.
Snowden was always an unlikely pardon recipient. There are too many loud voices saying that Snowden went beyond "whistleblower" status and made public some information that harmed the US national security. Snowden applying for Russian citizenship (which means he pledges allegiance to Russia) also did not help his chances of ever receiving a pardon.

Interesting that several folks who got pardons were sentenced for cannabis smuggling/distribution. Guess times really are a-changin'  Cool

And those that are waiting that he will pardon himself, he did not. So interesting what will happen after this? Will there be lawsuits coming after him? Let's see...

The list is quite unexpected but he made up his mind to pardon those individuals. So let's respect his decision.

It's a toss up of who's worse - Steve Bannon or the former Detroit mayor that was caught up on racketeering charges - https://www.wxyz.com/news/region/detroit/president-trump-pardons-former-detroit-mayor-kwame-kilpatrick

Guy is the textbook definition of a grifter. Pitiful list by Trump.

I never expected Trump to follow through on pardoning Snowden though. Neocons want to see him droned for some odd reason so they probably tried their hardest to talk Trump out of it, if he was considering it at all. Assange is a Russian stooge, and Ulbricht apparently tried to hire a hitman to kill someone, I'm glad they weren't pardoned.

"We're gonna build the wall and Mexico is gonna pay for it!"

"They'll pay for it later!"

"The military will pay for it!"

"You will pay for it"

"My Chief Strategist will run a charity scam to build the wall, keep your money and then I'll pardon him!"

This was like one of the golden things that got him into the White House and nothing ended up happening here and he really didn’t even talk about it.

Most of the conversations regarding it was him saying that it actually was being built and the media was lying about it.

Interesting that several folks who got pardons were sentenced for cannabis smuggling/distribution. Guess times really are a-changin'  Cool

If Trump does run again, he’ll lean on this as a way to get the votes from minority groups and others that have been harshly punished by these drug laws over the years.

Maybe he’ll use this sort of stuff as a key foundation of his Patriot Party, if he ever actually forms that.

The site has switched over to the new administration so obviously Biden and his evil witch of a VP are censoring everything... or some low-level tech screwed something up.

Any guesses at Ross Ulbrichts odds?
I would strongly doubt that Ulbricht gets pardoned. Ulbricht allowed people to have greater access to addictive drugs via his Silk Road platform. A major part of the Trump Administration agenda was trying to stop the flow of illegal drugs into the US.

The Lil Wayne pardon is the most hilarious. I have no clue what federal charges he's caught up on, but it sure does explain why he randomly endorsed him for reelection last year.
More likely, Trump pardoning Wayne is payback for the endorsement.

Tucker Carlson on his show tonight called for Trump to pardon Julian Assange, and John Kiriakou, the whistleblower who disclosed the waterboarding of detainees in 2007. The argument for Assange to be pardoned is on 1st amendment grounds, and Kiriakou is on the grounds that he made public information that the public had the right to know that was being kept secret by the intelligence community. Both should be pardoned.

I would imagine, given what we see of his personality, that Trump will only pardon those he thinks will be able to return the favour somewhere down the line.

Or he could pardon Biden, Pelosi, Schumer, etc so that he could claim that (a) they're criminals and (b) it's very ungrateful of them to proceed with the impeachment anyway.

Yes, I've been reading too many BADecker's posts.

Going to be pardon frenzy tomorrow, news is saying 50-100+ names could be pardoned, commuted, etc tomorrow. Curious on what friends / family of Trump is going to end up being on the list.

Sad thing is that it seems like Edward Snowden isn’t going to be getting a pardon — that’s the only person that Bill Barr preemptively tried to stop - (Here’s the report on it) - https://twitter.com/lachlan/status/1351239845889323014?s=10

Hopefully we’ll see some good names on the list instead of just friends and family. Then again though, usually the list at the end only includes friends/family.

That's the one I was watching out for, too. My assumption—and I think it's a reasonable assumption—is that Tiger Joe will be lined up as Trump's running mate for '24. Plus a of big cats would really supplement his insurrectionist army.

criminally liable for inciting violence.

Can he pardon himself for things that happen in the future? Because that's surely his biggest issue at the moment.

I think everyone is expecting some Trump-fuelled insurrection around the country on inauguration day. There's a reasonable chance that people will die, and that Trump will refuse to condemn the perpetrators, and thus open himself up to further charges of incitement... by which time he'll no longer be POTUS and no longer able to contrive a pardon for himself.

He can only pardon people for crimes that have already been committed. It's not clear if he is able to pardon himself.  If he does, he can still be indicted - but they would need to litigate the pardon before moving forward with the cases.

I'm thinking he may just not pardon himself or his family and plan on using the fact he didn't pardon himself or family as evidence that they didn't commit a crime.  It's obviously a stupid defense, but would be repeated millions of times by Americans who believe it.

Trump's speech in DC is clearly protected on first amendment grounds, as bad as it was for Trump politically.

Yes, Trumps speech is protected on first amendment grounds.
But the first amendment doesn't protect you from being held criminally liable for inciting violence.  Since nobody is suggesting Trump shouldn't have been allowed to give a speech in DC, I'm not sure what your point is.

With regard to Trump's phone call with the GA Secretary of State, I understand the conversation was settlement talks over a dispute that Trump was a party to.

They were discussing the general election.  The dispute was over whether or not the GA SOS would report that Trump received more votes than Biden, which would be a crime.

Trump tried to convince him to commit this crime through various forms of begging, threatening and bullying.

The Washington DC AG is also considering indicting him for his joint session of congress stunt.
I don't doubt that Trump will be prosecuted by many local prosecutors, but I doubt they will stand up to Supreme Court scrutiny, at least as long as the case is heard prior to Democrats packing the court. Trump's speech in DC is clearly protected on first amendment grounds, as bad as it was for Trump politically.

With regard to Trump's phone call with the GA Secretary of State, I understand the conversation was settlement talks over a dispute that Trump was a party to. If this description holds up, it would be very improper for the GA Secretary of State to release the recording of the call, and in any case, what Trump was saying does not fit the statutes regarding Voter fraud.

Every president is giving out pardons right before leaving office. It's just normal and might be part of some campaign promises to some rich folks. He isn't really doing it for publicity or anything since the election is long over. Only question I have is why not just pardon Edward Snowden? It's been a long time now since he moved to Russia. Why not bring him back?

So....
Its getting down to the finish line.
I predict we are going to see a flurry of pardons any time now.
Its going to be interesting to see if our dear old DIMPOTUS (Double Impeached ....)  actually decides to pardon
some  of his delusional worshipping followers who stormed the capitol, now that they are having their 15 minutes of fame on the intertoobz, which will no doubt convert to 10 years in the Stoney Lonesome....
(unless of course they get a pardon from their Supreme Being Orangeman Leader because they were true patriots, doncha know....)

I'm surprised he's waited so long, today was his final Friday as president, the day you usually pardon people if you don't want it to hit a weekday cable news cycle.

Imagine if he was planning to pardon himself and family but got surprise 25th amendmented.
Typically outgoing Presidents will make a flurry of pardons on their last day in office, in the morning (they leave office as of noon that day). I would expect the same for Trump.

Pence as already indicated he is not going to invoke the 25th amendment, and the Senate is not in session until the 19th. Unless Trump resigns prior to the end of his term, he is not going to be removed from office.

Yeah this is all true.  There was a day or two after they stormed the Capital that Pence hadn't responded and reports said Trump hadn't even spoke to him for days - if there was even a small chance of 25th being invoked, smart play would be to pardon yourself immediately.

The real attempted voter fraud... perpetrated by DIMPOTUS himself.
And in this case, there is actual recorded evidence.
(Unlike the 69 nonsensical cases, lost or laughed at by judges thrown out, filed by DIMPOTUS and his clown car lawyer team.)
And a self pardon ain't gonna cut it, apparently...

Quote from: The New York Times
ATLANTA — Prosecutors in Georgia appear increasingly likely to open a criminal investigation of President Donald Trump over his attempts to overturn the results of the state’s 2020 election, an inquiry into offenses that would be beyond his federal pardon power.
The new Fulton County district attorney, Fani Willis, is already weighing whether to proceed, and among the options she is considering is the hiring of a special assistant from outside to oversee the investigation, according to people familiar with her office’s deliberations.
At the same time, David Worley, the lone Democrat on Georgia’s five-member election board, said this week that he would ask the board to make a referral to the Fulton County district attorney by next month. Among the matters he will ask prosecutors to investigate is a phone call Trump made in which he pressured Georgia’s secretary of state to overturn the state’s election results.

The Washington DC AG is also considering indicting him for his joint session of congress stunt.

As they arrest members of his cult they keep saying the same thing to the FBI "I did it because Trump asked us patriots to save the country".  Probably don't even realize how bad they're fucking him.  Although some of them might be realizing how bad Trump fucked them.  A few have already asked him for pardons - seems unlikely he'll pardon them though, nothing it in for him.

Will he try to pardon himself??

I don't think he can pardon himself, as much as he pardons others from criminal charges, unlawful behavior, etc.

This would be entertaining for all of us, as we see this man struggles for something.

And those supporters who blindly support him would be also fun to watch in the side.

Don't you have to accept responsibility for the actions that they're pardoning for to actually be pardoned? Which is pretty much accepting guilt for the crime that you're accused of, even if it's completely wiped off your record anyway.
Not quite.

If you are pardoned for a crime, you can no longer be convicted for said crime. This means you are no longer protected by the 5th amendment against being forced to testify against yourself. It is possible for someone to not recognize a pardon in order to not have to testify about their own involvement in illegal activity.

Accepting a pardon often implies the person is guilty. There are times in which this is not the case, for example, if additional evidence is made public that shows a person is innocent, but they cannot use this evidence because of a legal technicality.

There is only one way Biden can possibly take the office of the presidency January 20. That's if Trump pardons him.

I just read an article which says that Trump is planning to give a pardon to Saudi Prince, and the first thing that came to my mind was is this the pardon for the khashoggi murder, but it turns out that this pardon is for a planned murder attempt on Saad Aljabri.

It’s pertinent to note that the attempt never took place, but yet Saad Aljabri had filed a case against the crown prince, and now if Trump does gives the Prince a pardon he’ll make him look guilty of this crime Grin. What do you’ll think will the crown prince get the pardon or he won’t?.

Not going to touch on the actual topic itself, though they're considering giving immunity to him from a civil lawsuit which is going through the courts now. Not a pardon or anything like that because a pardon does nothing for someone that committed a crime in another country as they can't be prosecuted for their crimes in the US anyway.

Don't you have to be charged with some sort of crime to pardon yourself?
No. There are no limits to the pardon power, except that only the President can issue a pardon for crimes against the United States (Federal crimes). After the Civil War was over, President Johnson pardoned all the confederate soldiers in order to heal the country.

Will he try to pardon himself??

Why? He didn't do anything wrong. Allegedly. Nor did any of his family members or family pets like Giuliani. Surely he wouldn't be pardoning them for no reason.
Trump and his associates will likely be prosecuted for political reasons by the next administration, especially those associated with Harris. A pardon would preempt those political prosecutions.

Biden has signaled that he won't be using the DOJ to attack Trump, though It'd be understandable tot think that Trump does not trust that in the least.

he did nothing wrong, and all those contractors where confronted with a disgusting environment,

some afghans begged the US to bring them a democracy. and have put the army into afghanistan where they where confronted by suicide bombers etc.

if you chase down everyone for the human rights abuses of anyone your won't get rid of a single bad guy, because life isn't about good and evil its about various ideas, concepts and tribes fighting against each other for acces to consumption capacities and power.

Trump has pardoned another 26 people tonight, currently not sure on what the list of people is though it includes full pardons for:

Stone, Manafort, Charles Kushner(Kushners Dad), George Papadopoulos, former US congressman Chris Collins, and the four Blackwater guards involved in the Iraq massacre, Alex van der Zwaan, the Dutch lawyer who was sentenced to 30 days in jail after pleading guilty to lying to Mueller investigators; two Border Patrol agents convicted in 2006 of shooting and wounding an unarmed undocumented immigrant and then covering it up; and several people convicted of non-violent drug crimes serving lengthy sentences.

I'm a bit disappointed Snowden wasn't pardoned.

Snowden is a hero and should definitely be pardoned. I'm disappointed but not remotely surprised that the Democrats are remaining silent on the matter. How any of his actions can be construed as criminal is utterly beyond me.

It's probably more than a democratic issue honestly. Republicans are not whistlerblower friendly considering a lot of conservatives are cozied up with the intel community and CIA/NSA. No DC politician is pro whistler blower except for maybe Tulsi Gabbard.

Oh yeah this is totally NOT A Republican/Democrat issue in the least. This is a big government / nanny state issue. Rand Paul is someone who I know who is lobbying President Trump to pardon Snowden, Assange, etc.

This is a big government surveillance state against the rest of the people. Not a right vs left issue that some will try to make it out to be.

In any event -- I'm a bit disappointed Snowden wasn't pardoned. Probably some Washington DC hacks convinced him out of it. They sure hate it when someone exposes their corruption.

Disappointed as well over here. Though we still have hope that this pardon could be a last minute thing as his term is ending, though I doubt the intelligence community is going to allow him to do that. They'll probably air out all of his dirty laundry if even makes an effort to do so. That's the threat for every other sitting President who wants to make a big decision like this.

Saw some whispers of an Ulbricht pardon, though haven't seen anything come out of that yet.

Currently waiting on my pardon confirmation in the mail. I submitted my form both online and by USPS. Maybe the USPS delays are slowing it down?

All of my crimes, both committed prior to the pardon and after should be forgiven so I should be good forever now.

Guy is totally going to try to pardon himself, lol.
