Nice.   That was probably $250 back in April'14, $1400 now.    Glad to hear you were able to revive that.

The 0.5 is likely sitting in a change address controlled by your wallet.    You should be able to spend it if that is true.
You were right. I was able to pull the private keys for the other address and import them into electrum and restore my balance. Thanks, I would not have thought about trying that otherwise.

So I have 0.5BTC in my old bitcoin core wallet and want to transfer to a lightweight client.

I mined 0.8BTC a long time ago and spent 0.3BTC leaving me with 0.5BTC. That was in 2014 and didn't use the client since. I turned it on recently and resynced the last 4 years and the 0.5BTC still shows up in my bitcoin core wallet.

When I checked the transaction history on blockchain.info is shows my remaining 0.5BTC was sent to another address leaving me with 0BTC at the time I made the purchase 4 years ago so when I import that private keys into eletrum is shows up with 0 balance.

Here is the transaction history https://blockchain.info/address/17j9KTB6bf2JdJ9ShvmfvUEkbmZyUr3PJy

Here is my bitcoin core client fully synced showing my 0.5BTC http://imgur.com/a/bmPLf

Can someone explain to me what happened to my bitcoin?
