The peeled coin looks like the key has been ripped so you probably only have a partial key, even if the address is still funded.

If you can recover a part of the key you might be able to use something like https://walletrecovery.info/ to figure out the missing bits. Good luck!

OK, got better photos. Looks like one of them at least is still intact! I guess we should sweep the other one, it probably was just mishandled and the coins are still on it.
Because we can only see the first bits of 12CY on the first coin there is a chance it has been redeemed as seen earlier in the thread. A quick search of the Casascius fulllist.txt does show some 12CY coins that are not swept. However you can not sell this coin as loaded on this forum anymore due to the tamper proof honeycomb effect being present. Your best bet there is to sweep it yourself and sell it unloaded if you'd like. Fingers crossed it is just peeled and not swept by your uncle.
12CY coins:

https://www.blockchain.com/btc/address/12CYrRADWbiMpkTgxnXUjgeEeh14jBNUP4 not swept
https://www.blockchain.com/btc/address/12CYt2o6KmshYBgRJBWdVsBKniFJ3dNBvx not swept
https://www.blockchain.com/btc/address/12CY9ukdXxwszPMX7hLRFyrXZLmu5tuBK1 not swept
https://www.blockchain.com/btc/address/12CYAesrsyPaGHanJi6GrgfETE5Hzb4qZ6 not swept
https://www.blockchain.com/btc/address/12CYsLHJ2hFJ3wsGbcU9Qmg7MN7N3bBhBv never loaded

The second coin looks to be intact and loaded and you should have no problem selling it as loaded here.

Hello Michael,

I may be interested in a peeled coin simply for its historical significance.

However, bear in mind that peeled coins (that are sweeped) are worth a fraction of face value.

Please let us know what you price you/ your uncle are looking for.

Ummm, that's what I said.

you are right, I was on my phone and just saw the link that digicoinuser posted and I was commenting on that. I will delete my repetitive post.

Welcome and good luck, Michail is correct and the pub address I couldn't make out the rest but the cas tracker site link is here if you want to investigate that one further: https://casasciustracker.com/?search=12CY

Not only was it peeled just a little, you can tell is was peeled off almost completely.

Also, part of the pub address is missing with only the first four characters showing...   12CY
From what I can tell, the pkey was torn away from it as well.  So, even if it was one of the 12CY coins that haven't been redeemed, there is no chance to get to the bitcoin from the missing part of the label.

My guess is that it is:  12CYkmtUESk1cnPfHJNpa4MZzYXfqVsjB6
- Which was redeemed in 2014

So, if you bought it a couple of years ago, it was already next to worthless when you bought it.

What's the back of the other one look like?

Yeah. That's upsetting. I'll know for sure tomorrow, it might just be one of them. I got them around when they came out, and gave these two to my uncle in 2014 as a thank you for letting me stay in his apartment. They might have been compromised soon after I gave them to him, too. But I appreciate the help in this thread, thank you all.

Yeah I do see the honeycomb now. Thanks. Any reason not to sweep the funds off that one at this point? It does seem unwise to trust a compromised coin.

If the funds were still there and you weren't aware this coin was peeled prior, I would sweep them immediately since there is no reason to keep the funds on the coin.

In cases like this I would expect someone peeled, took a photo of the private key to import at a later time (replacing hologram quickly), and the funds are already gone.  Whether it was malicious or not I can't determine.
Well, if someone did it I would think it's malicious. Hopefully the other one is intact. Thank you. It does make things simpler this way! I'll update when I have more info / have swept if the coins haven't moved.

I don't see any reason not to sweep them if the funds are still there. You mentioned you have two coins, is the second one also peeled?

Regardless, redeemed Casascius coins still have some value so you can still sell them once you have sweeped them.

I don't think they've been peeled, are you sure? I don't actually know what they look like after peeling. I'll get a photo of the front of the other one.

The one in the picture is definitely peeled as can be seen from the honeycomb pattern. The address first bits also don't seem very visible.

You can put the address first bits on this website and see if the funds have been moved yet.

Like digicoinuser mentioned, even if the funds haven't moved yet, no serious buyer would buy it because of the risk associated.

The picture Mopar posted above is the one I was referencing, the honeycomb pattern shows up after the hologram sticker has been peeled for these Casascius holograms.

It's quite a big difference in value and I'd recommend checking the firstbits to see the funding, either way if it's funded and has a peeled hologram the coin is considered compromised and no legitimate buyer would buy it expecting the funds to be intact.

look at the close up of the photo you took, you can see where the hologram was peeled, see the hex pattern? The holo was partially peeled back, most likely to reveal the private key to sweep the funds and then laid back down on the coin, however this leaves a very distinct pattern and makes it very easy to see that it was peeled.

Hologram looks peeled from the photo, nowhere did I see that mentioned.   Huh

after you mentioned that, I took another look - I agree, this one has been peeled. Maybe his intent is to sell the peeled coins

Willing to ship. I was thinking that I would someone with a significant real-world reputation that I know and trust already for escrow, but I'm reading that the forum has an internal system? I'm trying to figure that out now.

Hi,

I gave my uncle a pair of Casascius coins a few years ago when he let me stay in his apartment, and now he's looking to sell them. NYC area. Anyone looking to buy or have experience transacting these and know where to look?

Thanks!
-Michael

-Are they brass or silver?
-going to need pics of the coins to see condition.
-are you willing to ship?
-if so are you okay with using an escrow here on this site.  No one will send bitcoin first.

I think this covers the necessary questions and you will get some interest once you answer those 4 things.

At least one appears to have been partially peeled. I'm waiting for photos of the other one, my apologies, I didn't know how it looks when I first posted.

Thanks!
-Michael
