I don't know how it works, but some scientists blindfolded some mothers and got them to sniff each others baby's nappies. They all thought their own baby's nappy smelt less bad than all the other women's.
Your own farts probably work in a similar way. They don't normally smell that bad and when they do smell bad to you they must smell terrible to everyone else.

Not really the same. I don't think animals enjoy the smell but they sniff it for information and farting only marks your 'territory' for about five seconds until it dissipates.

When I fart I don't care, simply because it's the solely purpose of the fart to go away.
When I fart, it's often because there's a build-up of gas in my system, which can cause abdominal discomfort. Farting not only releases the gas, it also relieves the discomfort. So I have now made a connection between the smell of my fart and the discomfort relief. Bad smell + good feeling = bad smell not as bad after all.
When someone else farts, I get the full smell factor but none of the pain relief factor, and, pun intended, the whole thing stinks.
