The restrictions on PM are kinda lame, but I understand why they are there

I'm guessing the restrictions are to discourage spambots...
Can't they use something else, like captcha or recaptcha instead to allow real people to go around these restrictions ?_?
Or are there enough spammers who aren't bots that caused problems in the past?
