Best would be a Z270 MSI chipset with up to 6 GPU but more lanes in the PCI express than an Z170 chipset, price is almost the same, you can get one used at ebay for 100-150 USD.

For the processor I would go with the G4400t which consume low power.

Graphics RX 480 or GTX 1060 and above. With the bitcoin price almost 1400 USD mining with GPU-s is becoming more and more profitable nowadays.

GA-970A-DS3P
65 USD

Sempron or athlon II x2 cpu
5-9 USD

70 - 74 USD  @ 5 gpus.... 14 - 15 usd @ each gpu... try to go lower...

I actually have a spare Athlon x2 laying around, I'm going to grab a GA-970A-DS3P and use it for some old cards I have laying aroun (7950s, 380Xs, and a 7990 Shocked)

I get the biostar TB 250 BTC & Pentium G4560. When zcash first launch with unoptimized miners, a celeron bottlenecks a 6 gpu setup. 2C4T pentium should help with such bottlenecking in the future for only $15 more.

It can be used to mine monero, I estimate it does 100h/s so about 20 cents extra per day. When new coin launches they can cpu mine too.

Biostar Racing Z170 & G4400
Add in a Thermaltake G41 case
Boards were as low as $110, back in the day.
CPU is $65 or so.
Case was $40 AR, at one point.

Great spacing for 4 GPUs, if you don't want to mess with risers. The case can fit 4 GPUs, whereas most cases cannot

Hey guys,

I know the issue of which GPUs, pools, mining software, etc. gets brought up quite often but I thought we could look at some pieces of hardware I don't usually see mentioned on the forum. I'd like for us to get a list going of which motherboards and processors you are using in your rigs with some details (more the better):

Mobo Brand and Model:
PCIe Slots:
Price:

CPU Model:
Price:

Pros/Cons:

Total Combo Price:

I think this would be helpful for getting a better ROI on our rigs if we could nail down some cheaper combos that are also reliable. I'll start first with my newest test rig:

Mobo Brand and Model: MSI Z170A SLI Plus LGA 1151
PCIe Slots: 6 slots
Price: $89.99 (Refurb Newegg)

CPU Model: Intel G3930 Kaby Lake Dual-Core
Price: $43.00

Total Combo Price: $145 (after tax)

Pros/Cons: None so far, build still in progress.
