if you decide to create a vm then virtualbox is free and open source software for that.

no you assumed wrong. electron cash may have malware in it and that is why the recommendation is to use a separate computer. when you install malware on your computer it takes over the entire pc. Doesn't matter which electrum wallet you have your coins in. if that new wallet is on the same pc then it can be affected by the malware too. that's why they recommend you install it on a separate machine or a isolate it in a virtual machine.
Isn't that only an issue for for M$ Windows machines when installing a binary? I have seen a couple of discussion about that, but the recommendation in that case was to install from source, which is what I did. Not saying that this may be safer, but what else to do if no second machine available and no VM setup in place (and I really did not want to fiddle around with that just for one app)?

Of course I can hold off using Electron Cash for now, I'm in no hurry to transfer or sell my BCC, but in the end I really would like to have a wallet for BTC and BCC on the same machine just for simplicity.

the method outlined on the electrum website actually tells you to install electron cash on a separate machine entirely: https://electrum.org/bcc2.txt alternatively you can install it on a virtual machine on the same computer.  note that this forum is not for electron cash. it is for bitcoin electrum only
I assume the recommendation with installing on a separate computer was for security concerns, but I already followed the steps to move my BTC to a new Electrum wallet, with seed of the old (and now empty wallet) to be used for creating the BCC wallet in Electron Cash.

I really wish there was a way to use both on the same computer, and not having to fiddle around with two computers or a VM.

I'm using Ubuntu Linux and having had Electrum already installed, installing Electron Cash from source (using the method described on the Electrum website) seems to overwrite the binary, means both menu entries (for Electrum and Electron Cash) just start Electron Cash and Electrum seems to be gone. To be able to use Electrum again, I have to install it again and vice versa.

Is there a way to have Electrum and Electrum Cash on the same machine, or is this just not possible?

Any alternatives that allow me to use my Electrum seed to simply access my BCC?
