I've just listed two exceptional rubies from Montepuez mining region in Mozambique.  This mining area is producing some of the most beautiful ruby that the world has ever seen.  Please take a look:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/UNTREATED-Mozambican-pigeons-blood-ruby-GRS-report-1-02cts-WITH-VIDEO-/162195513627?ssPageName=STRK:MESE:IT

Don't hesitate to get in touch with me if you are looking for heated or untreated ruby from Mozambique.  I have access to exceptional stones of all sizes from one carat to ten carats and even larger.  Pigeon's blood color has never been so affordable- when Burmese material was the only game in town you had to invest an extraordinary sum to own top color.  Right now pigeon's blood color in one and two carat sizes is within reach for most ruby aficionados.  At three carats the price goes up quite a bit but nothing like 3-ct Burmese ruby, and the vast majority of Mozambican ruby is completely untreated.  As with the two rubies above which I've listed on eBay, independent laboratory reports are never a problem to obtain.  We do business with well-respected labs like Lotus, AIGS, GRS, and Tokyo Gem Lab on a regular basis.

If you want more information on this amazing ruby from Montepuez, Mozambique please feel free to get in touch with me and I would be more than happy to answer your questions.  I am not only a graduate gemologist (GIA), but I am also a stone collector and a ruby lover myself so it's not a bother!

I use small images- I just checked a couple of them to be sure but they are like 140K.  No clue why they don't show up, but I think I just won't use images anymore when I post.  It's unfortunate but such is life.

We still could simply click on the placeholder to open any picture in your thread where you inserted hyperlink to the picture. Also I am very thankful for your kind private message, which I will answer after asking some additional questions from my relative so that I could provide you important details about the blue sapphire seal-ring we want. GLWS!

That's very strange- when I click on the links they all come up just fine.  Are you logged in when you click?  Not sure if that makes a difference though...

Yes, I am logged in. I checked the URLs from the thread code and the code and the extensions are alright. When I visit the URLs directly, they show up fine in my browser. I was using the newest Firefox, but the whole case was the same from IE too because I checked it. My tips are either that the host ( postimg ) is somehow restricted by Bitcointalk or the pictures' sizes exceed the allowed size on the site.

Those image links still work- just click on each one and you will see!

No, I cannot view the pictures anymore :/ Some weeks ago I could view the pictures in this thread without a problem but nowadays I always get the invalid image proxy issue that was discussed on the forum before. In spite of having this issue, I still could ask for relevant pictures from you via PM, which I will do later, but maybe you could consider doing some research why the issue occurs. I think, fixing it could increase newcomers' attraction to your thread here  (;

Were the pictures removed / outdated from the thread?

Anyway, I shew your FB page to my relative and we were amazed. His first question was about the honesty of your offer, but I shew him the user feedbacks and official reports and he found them alright. He said that he would still wait with ordering for personal reasons yet but he said that he would definitely return to consider your offer. He would want to get a blue sapphire seal ring.

I also am thinking of buying it for him as a gift in the future, but we will see.

If you could share me some recent pictures, that we have not seen yet in your FB page, about your blue sapphire or even seal rings, I would appreciate it and I am sure I could help my relative have sweet dreams by showing your pictures to him... until I buy a similar for him and his dream becomes reality x))

The hottest days of summer are the coldest in the gemstone business!  Our slowest months are June, July, and August.  What does this mean for you?  It's a wonderful opportunity to jump on some of our eBay auctions because there is very little competition.  You can often win an item for only the very low opening bid.  Please take a look at our current auctions and grab the bargains!  Most of our listings even have a video:

We've just opened our new eBay store!  Watch closely over the next few days because more stones are coming and so is a fabulous shipping promotion!

http://stores.ebay.com/Paragon-Universal-Trade

Also there is a spectacular stone that has only a single bid and ends in two hours- please take a look at this amazing UNTREATED chrysoprase!  Unlike most chrysoprase this one is FACETED, not cabochon style.  Very unusual, and very high-quality:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/UNTREATED-faceted-chrysoprase-from-Australia-47-carats-WITH-VIDEO-/162149061112?ssPageName=STRK:MESE:IT

My auctions are NO RESERVE- if you have the highest bid at the end YOU WIN THE STONE.  I don't have a secret "reserve price" like some eBay gemstone sellers do.  This is a risky proposition but we like it as it makes the auctions more exciting.

Of course as always, if you win on eBay you can pay with bitcoin- no problem at all!  Just send me a message on this forum, or via eBay after the auction and I would be happy to take your bitcoin payment.

Each stone that I offer is selected by hand.  My wife and I are actually in the gemstone district here in Bangkok and we put a lot of time and effort into the selection process.  When you see a stone in one of our threads, it was generally selected from a very large parcel of stones.  We are not like the high-volume stone dealers on eBay that buy a huge parcel of stones, and have a large staff to photograph and list each one.  We are selecting only the "cream of the crop"- stones without a brownish undertone, stones that are very well-cut for maximum brilliance, and stones which are free from chips, cracks, and blemishes.  We pick stones that we, as gemstone collectors, would be proud to own.

This is a very nicely saturated rhodolite garnet that was mined in Tanzania.  It is completely untreated.  It weighs 2.47 carats, has superb brilliance and eye appeal, and measures 9.31 x 5.30 x 4.84mm deep.

You can win this on eBay right now:

Please get in touch with me if you are looking for any gemstone.  Whether it is ruby, sapphire, emerald, diamond, or one of the less popular stones like tourmaline, spinel, tsavorite garnet, or a rarity like alexandrite- I can supply it.

I would be more than happy to talk with you about getting the most value for your money.  As a Graduate Gemologist, I can also advise you on treatment methods and how to protect yourself in what is basically an unregulated market.  You want to be sure that you not only get a good value, but that you are getting a gemstone that is being represented accurately.  There is nothing wrong with ruby that is filled with glass, or sapphire that is heated to high temperature in the presence of beryllium to enhance the color.  But if you pay "untreated" price for such stones you are not being treated fairly.

This is a fabulous citrine from Brazil.  It has been treated with heat.  Since the ancient Egyptians learned thousands of years ago that you can cook amethyst in a fire to create citrine, this has been a very common treatment.  This stone weighs 6.01 carats and measures 11.86 x 9.37 x 6.93mm deep.  $4.75 per carat plus $12 for registered mail.

Before you buy any jewelry please contact me.  My wife and I live and work in Silom, in the center of the gemstone district of Bangkok.  We can source any stone that you desire and produce custom jewelry for less than you would pay to buy a comparable piece "off the shelf" in Western consumer markets.  Thailand has a very business-friendly climate, and because it is both a cutting and trading center for gemstones I am certain that we can save you money.  It is a straightforward process that starts with your idea for a beautiful piece of heirloom-quality jewelry, and ends with a FedEx or UPS Express parcel at your door!  We can cast in any metal that you desire such as yellow gold, white gold, platinum or palladium.  Because labor costs are lower in Thailand we have a sustainable competitive advantage.

You don't need to have knowledge of jewelry to get started.  Many people contact me and say "Hey Dave, I found this beautiful sapphire ring online- can you make one like this?"  We can find the right stone for the client's budget, then have our CAD artist draw an image showing how the piece will look.  It is then milled in jeweler's wax, cast in the metal of choice, and the stones are set.  At that point all that is left is the shipping.  Insurance is available of course.

We select each stone by hand, and our bench jeweler works to an extremely high standard to ensure a quality finished product.  If you are curious about the process please get in touch and I will do my best to fill in the blanks.  Making custom jewelry is neither as complicated or expensive as you think!

Please also inquire if you are interested in blue sapphire, color-change sapphire, emerald, tanzanite, or any other gemstone.  I can source stones directly in the colored gemstone capital of the world, the trading center of Bangkok, Thailand.  My wife Melanie and I have an office in BIS/Warner building at the intersection of Silom and Mahaesak roads- ground-zero for the global gem trade.  If you visit tiptopgem.com or paragonuniversaltrade.com, it leads to my Facebook account.  Ask me questions there, or see my personal account in the comments- "David B. Fortier" and add me as a friend!  Most colored gemstones travel through a dizzying array of wholesalers before they appear in a jewelry store in the Western consumer markets.  There is no need to pay such a huge markup- you can buy direct.

Melanie and I are more than happy to supply stones with an independent laboratory report.  If you don't like the report that comes with a stone, just let me know which report you prefer and that lab will examine your gemstone and give you their opinion in writing.  Whether you want Tokyo Gem Lab, Lotus, GIT, GIA, AIGS, or any independent lab report it's never an issue.

Of course we also make custom jewelry, and Thailand's low labor costs and business-friendly regulatory climate mean you save money.  We can make a wax model of your jewelry by hand or we can use CAD (computer-aided design); we can cast in yellow or white gold, palladium, or platinum, and we can supply accent diamonds at an extremely competitive price.

Find me on Facebook and send a message if you have any questions about our products or service.  We also regularly do design and model work for small independent jewelers who don't have the capacity to make wax models in-house but need a low-cost solution and top-quality.

This 3+ carat ruby is from Montepuez mine in Mozambique, where virtually all fine ruby is being sourced since the Burmese supplies have dried up.  It is vivid red, and has not been treated- no heat, no oil, no glass-filling- nothing at all.  It was mined from the earth then cut and polished.  The included laboratory report is from GRS/Swisslab, one of the most respected institutions in the colored gemstone trade.  It bears the signature of the laboratory's founder, Dr. Adolf Peretti- a noted authority and author of hundreds of research articles on ruby and sapphire.  Please inquire for details.

Pigeon's blood ruby is very desirable; in fact it is the most desirable color for ruby.  For a long time the best stones came from Burma but these are mostly mined out, and now the majority of very high-quality stones are coming from the mine in northern Mozambique, not terribly far from Pemba.  You would have a much easier time finding a Mozambican ruby of fine color than one from Vietnam.  Most of the Vietnamese ruby that I have seen here is pinkish, and not top color.  I don't mean to say that there is no pigeon's blood ruby from Vietnam, just that I have not seen any in the market here in Bangkok.

Beautiful gemstones do not have to be expensive.  If you would rather not pay tens of thousands of dollars for a natural ruby, this 3.30 carat synthetic ruby just might fit the bill.  $25 plus shipping.

This type of stone used to be a rarity- a flame-fusion synthetic ruby with inclusions that appear to be natural.  Now they are becoming widely available and the process by which they are produced has become known.  The crafty Thai cookers have taken synthetic sapphire and quench-crackled it to create fissures in the stone.  Then it is cooked with a flux chemical in order to fill the fissures in.  The result is a synthetic gemstone that appears to be natural, even to many experienced jewelers.

If you would like more information about this process please feel free to ask.  Bear in mind that this stone began life as a synthetic ruby that was created in a laboratory, not a natural ruby that was mined from the earth.  The interesting thing about synthetic ruby is that it has the same physical, chemical, and optical properties as a natural ruby.

For anyone who wants to learn more about gemstones this is an exceptional example of just how tricky gemstone treatments can be.  Many people have been fooled by these stones...don't be one of them!

As a GIA Graduate Gemologist I understand my obligations to portray gemstones accurately, price them fairly, and disclose any and all known treatments.  If you have any questions about this stone just send me a PM on this forum, or go to tiptopgem.com or paragonuniversaltrade.com as both of these forward to my business Facebook page where you can leave a message.  Gemstones are not just my business, they are my passion so please feel free to get in touch if you have any questions about gemstones, or about the market price for ruby, sapphire, emerald, or diamond.

That's a really good question grouper fish.  There are a lot of resources around but of course you will want to pick and choose to get the most accurate information possible.

Barbara Smigel is brilliant and her free online course is great:

http://www.bwsmigel.info/

That will give you a lot of information as a beginner.  It is accurate, well-organized, and explained very well.

I like this book a lot, and there is a newer edition that is a lot more expensive, but the old one is great and cheap:

http://www.amazon.com/Gemstones-World-Revised-Walter-Schumann/dp/0806994614/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1414846613&sr=1-2&keywords=gemstones+of+the+world

Check your local library for books as well!

Maybe the best advice I can give you is to take your time.  Some people jump right in and buy expensive stones before they are ready and before they understand the various treatments and how they affect value.  This can be a disaster.  There are plenty of very inexpensive gemstones that are interesting and beautiful and that have a lot to teach you.

It is fun to look at gemstones on eBay, but be extremely cautious of the claims made and be aware that some gemstone dealers have no problem lying if they think you will never figure it out!  Also remember that much of the information in the gemstone auctions is just plain wrong.  If you read a statement on eBay, try to verify on your own via other sources whether it is right or not.

Most of all, have fun and enjoy whatever direction your interest takes you.  Some people collect only synthetic gemstones, and this is a great way to start any collection.  Get to know the "fakes"- the synthetics and imitations- before you invest much of your hard-earned cash.

Ask questions on this thread if you want; I would be happy to answer them.  Best of luck to you.  I think you will find gemstones to be a very compelling hobby that has a lot to offer.  It's art, beauty, science, and fun!

Just ask if you are curious about any of the stones in the gallery and I will tell you what they are, how much they cost, and what the weight and dimensions are.  Just glancing over the pictures I see:

Burmese peridot

Pakistani peridot

Sphene from Madagascar

Tanzanite

Sapphire

Amazonite

Yowah/Koroit opal

Mexican matrix opal

Fire agate

Quartz with tourmaline inclusions

Quartz with rutile inclusions

Tourmaline

Rhodolite garnet

Prasiolite

Tanzanian sunstone

Blue topaz

Carnelian

Lemon quartz

Amethyst

Fire opal

Botswana agate

Mookaite (brecciated)

Spinel

Color shift change garnet

Demantoid garnet

Kyanite

Mawsitsit from Burma

Kyanite

None of these are expensive gemstones but many are very beautiful and they are interesting as collectible gemstones and for anyone who wants to learn more about gems with hands-on experience but doesn't want to invest a huge amount of money to learn.  Most concepts in gemstones and in gemology are simple and they apply universally across all qualities of stones.

On very rare occasions, my wife and I come across important gemstones.  This stone has to be one of the most remarkable rubies I've seen to date.  At over 9 1/2 carats it is a massive size.  Because it is totally untreated and has a GRS/Swisslab report signed by Dr. Peretti stating it is unheated and also pigeon's blood color, this is truly an important stone.  It hails from the Montepuez mine in Mozambique.

Please inquire if you are interested in this or any other ruby.  Also if you are a gemstone afficianado or just want to learn more about gemstones, please send me a PM here on the forum with your e-mail address and I will add you to my newsletter list.  I publish perhaps 6-10 newsletters per year and each one has very valuable information on the gemstone trade from an insider's perspective.  Because my wife and I are in the gemstone district in Bangkok, we have access to stones and information that is not widely available.  Because we use Constant Contact to publish our newsletter, unsubscribing is just a click away if I bore you.  But you will not be bored if you have any interest in gemstones; I assure you!

This stone is offered at 725,000USD.  We have ruby from one to ten-carat size and prices are generally from $1,000 and up depending upon quality, color, and treatment distinctions.  This particular stone is completely untreated, but we also offer ruby that is heated, or heated and flux-healed.  If you have any questions about ruby treatment, please inquire with me by sending a message on this forum, or go to tiptopgem.com or paragonuniversaltrade.com which forward to my business facebook page where you can leave a message, or just give me a call.  My wife Melanie and I are in the office from 11:00AM to 6:00PM Bangkok time.  If you are in the USA you can dial my desk direct and toll-free at 800-607-1425. That number has been operational for my American and Canadian clients for over a decade! From other countries you can reach me at +66 2-635-8585.  I would be happy to take your call and answer your questions!

Other lab reports are available for this or any other gemstone that we sell.  In colored stones, it is important to know what you are buying and an independent laboratory report is an important part of that assurance.  If you have questions about the labs that are available please ask and we can discuss how much the various reports cost and the time each lab takes to complete their work on your stone.

As always if you have any questions about ruby, sapphire, emerald, or diamond- or colored diamonds- please get in touch!

If you are interested in a Sri Lankan (Ceylon) sapphire that has only been treated with traditional heat, and you also want deep, serious blue blue blue color, this might be the perfect stone.  Oh and it's cheap.  Well, we all have different ideas of cheap but relative to the sapphire market right now in Bangkok, I feel that I am offering this blue sapphire at a very modest price.  I have been buying and selling blue sapphire for eleven years now, and in terms of value this is one of the best I've seen.

The color is superb, the brilliance is superb, it has a very large "face" meaning that when the cutter cut the rough stone, he was able to be very efficient and he got more face-up size than you would normally see in a sapphire that weighs this much.  This is critically important to the value of a stone because nobody wants to pay for a sapphire that looks smaller than its weight would suggest.  This blue sapphire from Ceylon weighs 2.81 carats, but face-up it appears to be over three carats.  It's a big, bold, bright yet deep blue gemstone.

Sapphire is the birthstone for September, but blue sapphire is also a statement of loyalty and fidelity.  If you can only give a woman two gemstones in her lifetime, if she is your wife choose ruby and sapphire.  Ruby is love and passion, blue sapphire fidelity.  It sounds like a great combination, yes?

2.81cts x 1390USD/ct

Natural blue sapphire from Sri Lanka, cushion shape, only traditional heat.  No diffusion, no chemicals- only heat. This gemstone was mined from the earth, cut and polished, then heated by man.  I do not expect you to take my word for any of this, so an independent laboratory report is available.  I am in the gemstone district in Silom, Bangkok, Thailand and there are probably a higher concentration of gemological laboratories here than anywhere else in the world.  If you want AIGS, GRS, GIA, Tokyo Gem Lab, GIT, or some other lab just let me know your choice.  I will then tell you how much the report fee is and how long it takes to get the stone back from the laboratory.

I am a GIA Graduate Gemologist and you can verify that at GIA.EDU.  I understand my ethical responsibilities to describe gemstones accurately, price them fairly, and disclose any known treatments that the gemstone has undergone.  And remember you not only have my guarantee, but also the independent laboratory gemologists' opinion of your gemstone.  All laboratories in Bangkok require two separate qualified gemologists to agree on the identification of a gemstone before a report is issued.  I can offer my opinions on laboratories here as I am personally acquainted with a fair number of gemologists employed at these institutions.  These are only my opinions however and other gemologists or gemstone dealers in Bangkok may disagree with some of my assessments.  Still, if you want to know just ask me.

If you buy a ruby, sapphire, emerald, or diamond and you don't buy it from me there is a very good chance that you didn't get the quality that you can afford.  That's a shame.  Don't settle for gemstones that are mediocre.  A gemstone will outlive you, and it will outlive the next generation and the next.  Even if a beautiful gemstone only gives you pleasure and pride for your lifetime, isn't that enough to ensure that you invest your time and money wisely?  My wife and I shop very efficiently.  We are right in the middle of the gemstone district in Bangkok and we have literally hundreds of gemstone wholesalers from whom we can source.  Whether we buy from a huge wholesaler or a one-man cutting shop, we always buy the most beauty for the money.

Please call me at 800-607-1425 if you are in America or if you are in a different country dial me direct at +66-2-6358585.  Tip Top Gem and tiptopgem.com are wholly owned by Paragon Universal Trade Co., Ltd, a Thai limited liability corporation.  When you dial my number it rings on my desk in Bangkok and we are in the office from 11:00AM to 6:00PM Monday through Friday.  Please give me a shout, or e-mail me your requirements for a ruby, diamond, emerald, or sapphire.  My wife and I would be pleased to serve you.

I have an unusual stone.

It is a very beautiful UNHEATED blue sapphire.  This sapphire has a report from an independent gemological laboratory that states there is no evidence of heat treatment.  If you prefer a report from a different laboratory of course that is not a problem.  Labs like AIGS, GRS, GIT, and others are available.  Just inquire about the time and costs- some can take up to 8 weeks.

Please inquire if you need more information on this stone.  I am a GIA Graduate Gemologist and I understand my obligation to describe stones accurately and to disclose any treatments.  This blue sapphire is untreated.  It was mined from the earth, cut and polished.  No heat, no dye, no high temperature lattice (Be) diffusion, no fissures filled with foreign substances.

American customers can call me at 800 607 1425.  My wife and I are in the office from 10A to 5P Monday to Friday Bangkok time.  When we are not in the office this number goes to voicemail so feel free to leave a message.  We will get back with you.

If you do not get my email newsletter you are missing out on a lot of shots of the inner-workings of this organization!  You will get to know Melanie and me much better if you get the newsletter, and you will also get to see some of the latest spectacular new rubies, sapphires, emeralds, and tanzanites that we have for you, as well as fun new pics of our office and the surroundings in Bangkok.  We have big plans for this Christmas season so stay tuned!  Send me a note and ask to be added to the mailing list.  It is a one or two-click unsubscribe process if you decide, hey, this guy writes a bunch of boring drivel!  But if you are interested in gemstones I seriously doubt that you will be bored by what I write and the pictures and videos that I take.

We also function as a full-service gemstone brokerage for clients who want to come to Thailand and negotiate directly with Thai gemstone dealers.  We have a full-time office in the heart of Bangkok's Silom gemstone district.  You can call my office direct +66 2-635-8585. OK, I have the unheated Mozambican pigeon's blood ruby in my hand!

This report is signed by none other than Dr. A. Peretti.

This is a remarkable gemstone with extremely saturated red color.  In fact, it is "pigeon's blood" red which is the top color in ruby.  This gemstone is not treated at all- not with heat or anything else.  This is a 100% natural vivid red color.  This stone was mined from the earth, cut and polished.  That's all- 100% natural ruby with world-class color as stated by the independent laboratory report.  Dr. Adolph Peretti is among the most highly respected gemologists in the world and his laboratory, GRS/Swisslab of Lucerne, Switzerland is among the world's elite in issuing independent reports of fine quality gemstones, particularly ruby and sapphire.  Dr. Peretti is one of the world's foremost authorities on corundum and has done extensive research of nearly all of the significant ruby mines on the planet.

As a GIA Graduate Gemologist, I understand my obligations to describe gemstones accurately and to disclose all relevant treatments.  That is easy work on this stone as the pictures are as descriptive as anything I could write and the treatment is very straightforward: there isn't any.

If you have any questions about this ruby or any other gemstone, please contact me.  I would be happy to talk with you about any topic related to gemstones, especially our specialties which are ruby, sapphire, and emerald.

I also have a toll-free phone number for my American clients:  800-607-1425.  My wife and I are in the office here in the gemstone district of Silom, Bangkok from 10AM to 5PM Mon-Fri Bangkok time.  If you are overseas but not in the USA, you can dial me at +66 2-635-8585.  That rings on my desk.

That is a beautiful ruby if you like synthetic stones.  I am actually a fan of them because you can get beautiful color for a very low price, and also they are very clean- high clarity.  Some people don't realize that synthetic ruby has the same chemical components as natural ruby, it has the same physical and optical properties and the same structure.  It is actually REAL ruby, but the crystal was grown in a lab instead of by the earth.

If you want to see how flame-fusion ruby is made, just follow this link:

http://www.yourgemologist.com/FlameFusion/verneuil.html

It is truly amazing!  In essence it is nothing but powdered aluminum oxide (with chromium added for the red color) through a flame which liquifies it and then it drops on a moving platform and hardens.  This Verneuil fellow was obviously very bright to accomplish this in 1902!

This is the ruby that will be for sale on Thursday.  I have pictures of the report, but I don't have the stone in my hand yet because the owner is away until Thursday.  Right now is the busy gemstone show season here with Bangkok just ending and the Hong Kong show just beginning, so many dealers are out of their offices.  That means some lag in getting the right stones.

Here is the addendum with color details designating "pigeon's blood" color.  This is the rarest of all ruby.  To have not only pigeon's blood but also UNHEATED is exceptionally rare and highly desirable in the marketplace.  This is not only pigeon's blood, but it wasn't cooked or treated with chemicals to get that color.  It was only mined, cut, and polished.  No other treatment whatsoever.

The signature that you see belongs to none other than Dr. A. Peretti, a foremost corundum expert.  If anyone is interested in ruby I would encourage you to visit Dr. Peretti's site and learn more.  It is a fabulous resource.  I especially appreciate the inclusion pictures on his site as when you are a gemologist the learning never stops.  The field trips that he takes and the degree to which he documents idiosyncracies in material between different sources is hugely helpful to me when I have a stone in my hand or under the microscope.

That is an inclusion page, but you will find a lot more if you click around.  The report verification page is critical if you are buying a gemstone with a GRS report.  GRS reports ARE FAKED so make sure yours is legitimate!

Definitely we deal in tanzanite.  I would be happy to check prices for you.  I have another client asking about three carat so I might as well look for you at the same time.  Do you know what shape you want?  Maybe oval or cushion?

Will keep an eye on this.

Do you deal with blue tanzanite? Around 4ct?

Obviously heated one. If you have unheated what price would be for the same stone.

Thanks Salty!  I guess in time I will build trust up too.  Obviously doing escrow helps because you can turn over a lot of transactions.

I know you can't trust the system 100%, but negative trust ratings are sure red flags!  I am very careful with anyone who has negatives.

Welcome to the SaltySpitoon, how Tough are ya?
Salty how do you have so much trust?  Is it because after a transaction you encourage people to leave trust?  I have been on here a long time and sold many, many items- both stones and custom jewelry- and I have only two trust!  I feel inadequate.

I've been here a long time, and done a lot of deals with people. I dont ask for trust, if people feel that they should go out of their way to leave it, it makes it all that much more special, I've never as much as hinted at leaving feedback to anyone I've dealt with. That being said, I personally don't value the trust system all that much. Its just a list of references to people who have no liability if someone they have done a deal with acts untrustworthy. The trust system is about as useful as Amazon reviews on products. So don't worry about it, you will have some customers who are so pleased that they will leave reviews for others to read, and in truth that doesn't give anyone extra incentive to buy from you, it just gives extra detail and people's opinions about your products. I'd leave you some myself, however I don't remember specifics. I know I ordered >60 BTC worth of stones from you, and that I was pleased, but I don't remember dates, reference threads, etc.

Anyway, I like Dave quite a bit, so that was my personal plug for him.

And as I said, I'll let you know when I get back into the biz, I've got a ton of other side projects I'm bouncing between, but I'm sure I'll land back at silversmithing.

Welcome to the SaltySpitoon, how Tough are ya?
Hey Dave, good to see you, congrats on the new office. Smiley

I used to buy a good deal of stones from Dave back in my amateur silversmith days, he is an absolute delight to deal with, and will make sure you know exactly what you are buying. If you are looking for stones, I'd highly recommend buying from Tiptopgem. He offers prices and customer service that is unbeatable. I'll sure I'll be buying more when the urge strikes me.

If you are fairly new to gemstones don't hesitate to contact me.  I will try to keep the jargon to a minimum to ensure you understand me!  And of course, as always- just ask a question about anything that you don't understand.  Gemstones are sometimes a complex subject but I am pretty good at breaking things down for beginners.  I don't bite, I promise, so ask me a question if you are curious about anything gemstone or jewelry-related.  We've been making jewelry for many years as well, and specialize mostly in gold, palladium, and platinum pieces with diamonds or white sapphires accenting the primary colored gemstone.  Any question related to jewelry metals is also welcome.  If I can't find the answer I sure know someone here in Bangkok who does know.

We are comfortable doing escrow with this stone, and your satisfaction is 100% guaranteed, as with every gemstone that we have sold in the last 13+ years.  Because we just opened our new buying office in Bangkok my wife and I are eager to serve the bitcoin community.  I have sold many stones on this forum, and have also made jewelry for clients who found me here on bitcointalk.org.

Now that we are right smack-dab in the middle of the gemstone district of Silom, we have access to more stones than ever before.  Our office is literally right across the street from the 67-story JTC, or Jewelry Trade Center.  We are on the 8th floor of BIS/Warner building at 119 Mahaesak Road.  This is the literal center of the colored gemstone universe.  Any ruby, sapphire, or emerald that you need can be efficiently sourced at a great price.

This is a picture of JTC from the 8th floor of our building (that is a Holiday Inn on the right that is spewing greenery from everywhere):

My wife Melanie and I recently opened a new buying office in Silom, the gemstone district in Bangkok.  Some people are surprised to hear that approximately 70% of the colored stones sold in Western consumer markets spent at least some time in Thailand.  Stones come here from all over- Africa, Sri Lanka, Burma, Cambodia, etc. to be cut and polished and/or heat-treated.  Bangkok is the major world hub of colored gemstones.

We specialize in ruby, sapphire, and emerald.  Yesterday a local Thai dealer who is a friend of ours came into our office with quite an unusual stone.  As you might know, corundum (ruby and sapphire are both corundum) is almost always heat-treated.  This improves color or clarity.  If a stone is a very beautiful color when it is mined, sometimes the owner of the stone decides to leave it totally natural.  Very often because so many of my clients are gemologists or gemstone collectors we deal in these special stones.  Some people find it very gratifying to collect or make jewelry from stones that are totally untreated.  If a stone has only been mined from the ground, then cut and polished it is exponentially more rare than stones that are treated with heat, radiation, or chemicals to improve their apparent quality.

This ruby was mined in Mozambique, which is famous world-wide for ruby.  It has been cut and polished but no other treatments have been done.  You can see on the GIA report that there is a notation stipulating that no evidence of thermal enhancement (heat treatment) had been noted.  Ruby and sapphire usually have internal thermostats. There are crystals- baby gemstones- that grew inside the stone while it was forming.  These materials react differently to heat than the ruby around them.  Some inclusions- like gemstones of different chemical and structural makeup- expand much faster when they are heated than the ruby itself.  What they leave behind is evidence that they tried desperately to expand as the heat got higher.  These markers are what gemologists like me look for under the microscope.  We see that these small crystals expanded quickly and modified the structure of the ruby around them.  It's a clue that a stone has been heated.

You can see on the GIA laboratory report that the gemologists who examined this ruby saw no evidence of thermal enhancement- no heat treatment.  Because there is no evidence of heat, we are 99.99% sure that it also could not have been chemically enhanced because chemicals that enhance ruby require extremely high heat to work.  The fact that this stone was not heated is critically important to its value.  Customers pay more for stones that have not been heated and dealers here know that, so when they have an unheated stone they expect more money for it.

This ruby has a very pure red hue which also makes it highly desirable.  Stones that have too much orange or purple in the red are not as highly prized in the market place.  If this stone showed orange or purple, the report would have to express the color as orange-Red, or purple-Red, but this one is pure red.

One of the most important parts of evaluating a stone that we want to buy for our clients is seeing how much brilliance it has.  This colorful sparkle is just the ruby reflecting light back through the stone to your eyes.  Light rays go into the stone, and the ruby's job is to turn them red so when they get back to your eyes you see nothing but RED.

As a Graduate Gemologist (GIA), I understand the importance of describing stones accurately and disclosing all treatments that a stone has had.  Because value factors like cut, color, origin, and treatment have such drastic affect on value, it is our job to describe the stone as it is so our clients can make good buying decisions.  If a stone is treated with chemicals and I sell it as unheated or only heat, that is a violation of FTC (Federal Trade Commission) guidelines.  As a member of the Jeweler's Ethics Association, I have taken a pledge to deal fairly and honestly with my clients.

This ruby has a pure red hue but as you might know, modern cameras are not as precise at reproducing color as your eye.  You can see in my pictures of the ruby that they have a slight orange cast.  This is a result of the failure of the sensor in my Nikon 3200 to reproduce the color faithfully.  As the report states, this stone is a pure dark red color.  GIA is one of the most highly respected laboratories in the world.

If you have any questions about this gemstone please don't hesitate to contact me.  I have a toll-free number for American customers: 800-607-1425.  My wife Melanie and I are in the office Monday through Friday from 10AM to 5PM Bangkok time.  If we are not in the office the call goes to voicemail.

You can also contact me through the messaging system on this forum.  I have been in this business for over a decade and have consistently delivered a quality product at excellent prices.  My wife and I would be very happy to hear from you if you need information about this stone or any other ruby, sapphire, or emerald.  We also deal in rare collectible stones if you are interested.

This is an exceptionally rare untreated ruby and we can offer it to bitcointalk forum members at a very good price.  We generally don't haggle but instead we offer the stone at a price that fairly reflects its value.  Some gemstone dealers start at a very high price, hoping that someone who is not very gemstone-savvy will quickly scoop it up.  But if you want to build a customer relationship, this is extremely detrimental to your business.  When the client finds out that he overpaid, he will never return to you.

This Mozambican unheated ruby is $2400 firm.  We offer shipping to almost any country world-wide with a high-value courier (G4S Securicor) and they are an authorized agent for FedEx.  When you get the stone on your end, it looks like a regular FedEx delivery.  G4S specializes in high-value packages and insurance is available.  Please inquire if you have any question about shipping by sending me a message on this forum, or from the USA toll free at 800-607-1425.  If you are an overseas client but not in America, you can call our office at +66-2-635-8585.  That rings at my desk and I am almost always there from 10AM to 5PM Mon-Fri.
