I agree - it would be a stupid idea.  Thanks all.  Smiley

You could change one pixel and it would let you use it, but it's a cool idea.

Maybe this could be solved with soft/perceptual/fuzzy hashes, but I don't know if the devs would want to be bothered for such a low-priority feature.

Why should vod unfairly get the monopoly on Peter Griffin boob-licking avatars?

Seriously though I don't think we should limit people to unique avatars. Users may use the same ones to indicate they're from a specific company (or crapcoin or whatever), and like mprep said free speech and all that shit.
Another additional argument: additional server work and/or space. Every time someone uploads an avatar, it has to be compared to all the other avatars in the forum pixel by pixel (or compared to their files hash or whatever else).

If it's compared by hash then the hash has to be stored as well (although the size probably wouldn't be too big in this case).

Couldn't you just upload it to a new link, or rename the file? How could this rule be enforced, exactly, and how would they be able to know who had it first?

Don't really think it'll be useful.

Heh i think it would be a good idea. At least it would get rid of all the default ones all the newbies seem to use. But hey, first things first we need to be actually able to upload an avatar  Roll Eyes

Well, it's been quite some time since avatar upload has been disabled, last October if I'm not mistaken. In over half an year most of those users aren't newbies anymore.

Don't worry, it was said they will be enabled on the new forum software. Back on topic, it really wouldn't stop people from using identical ones. As mentioned, changing one pixel already makes it unique.

Besides, don't we pride on free speech thus have to allow people to be boring and identical to others if they want Cheesy ?

Just throwing this out there to see what people think...

What if once you uploaded your avatar, no one else could upload the same one?
