I have 5 of the factory overclocked to 980MHz XFX R9 290's arriving tomorrow... Will let you know if they can be unlocked and full shader count enabled.

I just got 6 xfx 290 cards, apparently the xfx/powercooler had the best chance of unlocking. These are a later sku number though, so I've got no faith at all in success. I've also heard of plenty 290's "unlocking" but the shader count stays the same. I hardly call a higher stock clock "unlocked!"
Ya I'm looking to flash the 290x BIOS for 2 reasons: 1) see if I can get the full 2816 cores, and 2) get full voltage control. I've read reports on both happening on these Powercolors, which seem to react pretty positively to the flashing, but we'll see.
I'll let you know what I figure out if you'll do the same  Cheesy
Well I took a look with Hawaiinfo 1.2, and non of them are unlock-able to a 290x. Sad I never flashed the BIOS to see if I could get voltage control, but at this point I'm not gonna mess with them, I'd rather have them hashing. Seems most people with 290s who DO have voltage controll can only increase it (?), and not undervolt? I don't know, been doing a lot of researching today without finding out much info.

I've read that AMD has started to laser cores off 290 chips. I think they did the same thing on 6950/6970 flash at some point, right?

Never heard of a successful 7950/7970 flash, except for maybe a higher stock clock speed.

Getting 6 PowerColor 290 cards in tomorrow. Gonna try to unlock them to 290x cards. Will let you know how it goes.

Make sure you know what you're doing and be carefull, there are also stories found of cards which are instantly fried!
Just giving you a headsup

Hiya All,

I`ve read quite some confirming and non-conforming threads on overclock forums about the ability to unlock the 7950 to 7970 and all R9 series 290 to 290X etc via a firmware update.
Has anyone ever tried this and used it for mining?
Since it would increase your profit quite substantially with the same investment!

Here are some threads:
