Bump.
Yup, this is something that's pretty high up on my list (not that I tend to do things in priority-order, but still). I'm hoping to get to this one before 2024 is over (no promises, though).
It would be nice to see an update around this four social fields. Looking forward.

Maybe @Powerglove can do the magic hat trick once again?
This sounds like an easy task for Powerglove and something he can add to his always-growing to-do list if theymos gives him the green light.
@PowerGlove take a look at this topic!
I'm here, I'm here. Cheesy

Yup, this is something that's pretty high up on my list (not that I tend to do things in priority-order, but still). I'm hoping to get to this one before 2024 is over (no promises, though).

There's some background work (not user-facing) that's keeping me pretty occupied at the moment, but once I have most of that behind me, this is probably one of the first things I'll tackle (between now and then I'm going to alternate between the soul-suckingly tedious background work I mentioned, and picking some more low-hanging fruit by doing little micro-improvement patches here and there).

In the meantime, here are my thoughts from the last time this came up:

On-topic: Yep, the profile page/settings could use some attention. I've got some ideas about how to migrate those fixed-label messenger links to something more free-form, but I haven't thought about it deeply. I'll read through the topics logfiles posted, and see what folks have said/suggested in the past.

I've read through the topics helpfully posted by logfiles (thanks, man), and I've looked at the relevant SMF code, and I think I can put together a patch to improve the usefulness of those old fields. It's a little tricky because those fields have been baked into SMF's code without much forward-thinking or extensibility in mind, so I don't think it's wise to keep adding new fields using the current approach (both from a programming point-of-view and in terms of visual clutter). Even though most of those fields now refer to defunct services, I also don't think it's wise to remove any of them (with Bitcointalk, especially when messing with existing functionality, my inclination is to have a conservator/preservation mindset and to steer well-clear of destructive updates).

What about something like this:
- The number of fields, platform names and user input remains the same. This is how existing information is preserved.
- In the Forum Profile Information page a dropdown menu is added next to the defaults to switch with some new ones (Discord, Telegram, etc). This also keeps the same number of contact fields.
- Updating the contact fields should also update the small logo under the user's avatar, displayed in posts.
Yep. That's just about the best way to approach it, IMO.

I think the "Skype" field should probably be moved upwards to sit with the other fields, like this:

Then, I think those 5 field labels could be converted into dropdowns, like this:

That way, everyone's existing field values would remain intact, but people would be free to switch them out for more modern alternatives (and whenever those get out-of-date, adding new choices would be really simple).

There's some extra per-choice stuff to keep track of in the background (an icon, a regex to limit what can be entered, a template to transform what was entered into a link, etc.) and some database adjustments would be needed (I think ~5 new columns on the members table, and 1 new table to catalog the available choices would probably do it).

I'll see what I can come up with in my test environment...

(If anyone has any notes/ideas about this, feel free to either leave them here or PM me about it.)

BTW, never heard about Keet and Nostr before, had to Google it. Does anyone here actually using it?
Like you, I haven't heard it. Maybe it's not a popular platform here, so not many users use it.
I found one on playstore, but the number of new downloads is around 10k+. So it could be said that it is not as popular as other media platforms such as Telegram or WhatsApp.

The following information I can share with you:

Nostr more widespread,
I didn't find it in playstore, or maybe I don't know which application you mean.

I understand that for many people who are concerned about their privacy these things isn't needed. But after all, it's optional and we have fields for social media since early days of Bitcointalk. But most of these social networks who we have on Bitcointalk is obsolette for long time already, it would be good to replace with something that people use now.
BTW, never heard about Keet and Nostr before, had to Google it. Does anyone here actually using it?

I use both of them.
Basic idea is getting rid of centralised servers, getting the censorship of message hard to enact, as there isn’t a central sureface of attack.

Nostr more widespread, but keet has a better underlying security at protocol level.

Time will tell which protocol will survive.

  • Telegram
  • X
  • Keet
  • Nostr
In a rough order of importance

That is a very good idea fillipponne. I would certainly add GitHub to that list (or any other git network).

I am young, so imagine how I view these.  Cheesy

I have no damn clue what's AIM and YIM, I have only heard of MSN once, and that it was somewhat the standard of communication a couple of decades ago. The reason those fields exist, I suspect, is that we're running an SMF version of 2006-09; lots have happened since. At that time, people actually used MSN, Skype wasn't owned by Microsoft, AOL was one very popular website with lots of traffic, and ICQ & Yahoo Messenger weren't shut down yet.

So yes, it's really pointless to have those fields. Nostr is the social media Bitcoin plebs use nowadays.

There are other pressing requests, and these should be the least of our worries right now; how many old profiles do you see that have used any of those social options? I bet you can not see anyone; the community did not care about it before, and it does not seem like they do now. Put all of the new social networks here, and the only thing people would use is Telegram.

Perhaps we will see all of the new social media tags on the new forum.  Grin

I am not particularly young, and I have fond memories of ICQ, but damn, these social links in profile page are useless:
I'm too young to know about ICQ, just did a research and it's funny how ICQ means I Seek You Cheesy That's funny.
By the way, I don't understand this. Theymos does some tricks on April's fool day but doesn't change as basic thing as social references in profile page. He can easily change the names, can't he?

By the way, there are so many messengers and social media platforms today that I think theymos should give us an option to list, for example, three profile. Three empty fields on profile where user puts the name of social media or messenger and next to this field, the profile link or username.
We can also completely remove these options too, they aren't really necessary.

Skype wasn't owned by Microsoft
I miss those days when you could post a video on your Skype timeline (or whatever it was) from directly Metacafe.

I think that the profiles should be changed and social media references updated to something more recent. This sounds like an easy task for Powerglove and something he can add to his always-growing to-do list if theymos gives him the green light. I don't think it would take theymos longer than a couple of minutes to make those changes himself.

I don't care about old ICQ or any other social media accounts and I would prefer this archaic fields to be totally removed from user profiles.
As alternative this could also be left as empty fields and each member can add anything he wants to add including links.
In few years maybe X and Telegram also won't exist, and we are not going to make this changes all the time.

ICQ, AIM, MSN, and YIM have all been dead for a long time.
I challenge you out there, having had a profile on those (I think there is a profile of mine on every one of those, but AIM).

We could change these profiles with the following:
I understand your proposal but it is not new and many people requested it.

[proposal] Update Profile > Social Networks ICQ/AIM/MSN/YIM
Add a Telegram contact method.
Can the mod add GetGems Messenger to Forum Profile Information?
Profile information
The profile page should be changed. No one uses ICQ, AIM, MSN or YIM.]
Adding Telegram on the profile page
Suggestion to change the obsolete social media from account info
Why do we still have options for MSN, YIM etc?

I don't say your proposal is useless and I really hope this time, some changes will be made.

Oops.
Thanks for letting me know. I obviously wasn’t aware of this and I should have made a better use of the “search” button.
Really hoping this is the right time.

I frequently saw that space filled with “I+don’t+have+(social media name)” and other text that is not really the social account. Tbh I don’t remember using that social media even before so I don’t understand that filled during my registration and until now.

Adding a bio is much more suitable on that space rather than linking any social media account since we are promoting privacy here.

so no privacy-related issues arise from them: only he want a social identity linked to the profile must fill them.
Escaped me that it was optional
It's quite hard seeing forum members having that section filled
Maybe is the anonymity or because they don't make use of the available social handle.
Well many now switch to using their signature space to share their social media platform.
The idea is quite appealing with me recurring that it's optional.
But personally doesn't really mean much to me but I guess there are quite a number that would find such update welcoming.

Why hard code any social network?     Let the user enter his network and name.

Maybe Nostr( A decentralized social platform)

I added both your good suggestion to the OP and added a comment to stress that those fields are completely optional, so no privacy-related issues arise from them: only he want a social identity linked to the profile must fill them.

Maybe Nostr( A decentralized social platform)
But I doubt these changes are of emergency but would have a good feel and Would be easier understanding who you dealing with and reducing the likelihood of a Scam.
But anonymity Would be sacrificed
I think that's a big real cost except well the user may choose to share a dummy account.
Still there's nothing like a perfect plan what would go wrong
Would go wrong.

I used to be all for this idea, but considering the significance bitcointalk has in the crypto space, I would not want it to look to be indirectly affiliated with any of them. I'll be all for removing the old options and leaving contact info spot which the user can fill out with their active socials. For multiple social profiles, linktree can be used to show them all.

Maybe we cabbrevtist this when some of those popular platforms include the option to add your bitcointalk profile link.

Well it's absolutely an amazing suggestion but i prefer staying anonymous even though we are not truly anonymous on the internet but it's better I don't connect any of my social media handles here.

If I want to contact anyone here I would prefer sending a pm and requesting for the social media hands privately.

This would significantly improve the chance of getting the right profile for forum users without risking falling for scammers squatting their username handles on other social media.
I also agree with you on this; that's for those who are into doing business in the forum; that will really help them a lot, but for those who don't use social media and just want to remain anonymous, that won't matter to them.

To me, I see X, Telegram, Reddit, and Discord, and one of the most used social media nowadays. I haven't seen anyone make mention of Keet and Simplex as someone they will want to be contacted.

The fix should be pretty straightforward.
Those fields would be optional, meaning to be filled only by users who would like to have their identities tied to such a social network. Nothing would be compulsory, of course.

Actually the proposal is not new, as many other have aldready requested it:
