I noticed this topic a few days ago and I thought a lot about it.

First of all, I would like to congratulate OP for entering in Top 1000 of users with most earned merits. Being in first 1000 users out of 3.408.251 is a big achievement!

Second of all, I have to say that I share, in part, The Pharmacist's view:

990th most earned merit, and you've earned a total of 160 so far?  Holy crap, if that's true then that tells me that there really aren't that many members who are accumulating a lot of merits. [...]

If you're in the top 1000 merit earners with only (and I don't mean to belittle your merit earning) 160 merits, then I'd guess that most of the merits in existence belong to the profiles of a relatively small number of members.  Crazy, isn't it?

A while ago I made a suggestion to make rank-up more difficult. But seeing that

with only 159 merits you can enter in Top 1000 made me think again. Perhaps some can earn merits very easy, but as it seems almost all the other can not.

There are almost 3.5M users. I saw somewhere someone saying that only 100.000 are active. Even so, Top 1000 represents then the 1%. If we think what represents the Top 1000 out of ~3.5M, then the percentage is that small that even Windows' calculator (set on scientific mode!) calculates with an error. What I'm trying to say is that reaching Top 1000 should be priceless. Yet you can reach it only with 159 merits. I haven't looked at these stats for a while now (probably I did it in the past and I don't remember) and I think I lived with the idea that reaching Top 1000 (of most earned merits) would require much more merits. Maybe 400-500... but things are different, as it can be seen.

I am not under-appreciating those which reached the top with 159+ merits, don't misunderstand me. What I'm saying here is that I am shocked to see how difficult must be for some almost all (meaning 3.399M) users to obtain merits. And I don't believe all are shit posters... The situation actually reflects that most of the users have hard times in obtaining merits. If it was not like that, then reaching Top 1000 would have been a real struggle and it would require hundreds of merits to reach it. But like that, anybody which acts constructively on the forum can manage to be listed there, as obtaining 159 merits is not really a big deal. Or -- it should not be, but it is!

All these make me wonder why is this situation happening though? Merit sources are more now than in the past. Their sMerits "bags" are larger than they used to, as the initial ones were recently replaced with bigger ones. Yet, users are still unable to obtain merits... Why?

A while ago I made a suggestion - to have merit sources dedicated to lower ranks. This situation makes me think again about that suggestion of mine. Maybe this way more users can be helped...? And, unless all 3,399M users, excepting those from Top 1000, are shit posters - which I think it's impossible - then I don't see how it's possible for all the forum to confront with such situation, which is like a barrier for obtaining merits...

Shamm has almost as much Merit as Activity and climbed the Top1000 in a few months.
Or as theymos puts it:
Yes, my merit and activity are almost fair and that's my goal with this month.
And it's hard for me to reach these kinds of achievements than other cause When I came across here I do not have any little knowledge about bitcoin and related cryptocurrency even the price of Bitcoin I did not know. Sounds crazy right? But that is true.
I'm proud of what I've achieved and I don't care what others' opinions about this at least I did not break the rules and regulations here in our forum.
I think I did not? Huh
Anyways, thank you for all your support I appreciate that.

Shamm has almost as much Merit as Activity and climbed the Top1000 in a few months. Trickle down Merit seems to work just fine.
I've experienced it and I think we deserve to be proud of that achievement when there are thousands of other spammers who never care about the merit system and the quality of their posts.

For established users or users who have been here for a long time with their contributions, I think they don't really care much about the amount of merit they will receive. But if they want to contribute to the community then accepting as many merit as possible is the solution. I'm not talking about merit source, but I think some non-source users care about this.

Which just goes to show the trickle down of merits isn't occurring as theymos had intended.

Or as theymos puts it:
If they complain about amounts, tell them to complain to me. It's best if sources try to exhaust their source allocations, even if it means giving posts higher amounts than is typical. If you have 150 source merit and you only see 3 merit-worthy posts in a month, then I'd rather you over-give each of them 50 merit than let the merit expire. That way there are more people capable of sending merit, and the "merit economy" is less top-down.

As for OP, congrats on this achievement, starting at this forum is actually the most difficult part of the journey, so keep it up!
You may be right because some newbie even tend to plagiarize just because they want to post sensible things to this forum. I think that's the hardest part for those starting out with no knowledge of bitcoin on this forum, so congratulations to the OP for getting it right. It would actually be very worrying if more than 50% of the top 999 high merit users wanted to create thread like this at every step of their success, but luckily we only have a few percent.  Grin

There is indeed some kind of quintuplet gang around this forum that has a tendency of hoarding merits; not sure you've heard about them.

Though I must say I was also a bit surprised to see that 1000th merit earner is only a bit north of 150...

I think this topic more fit into the Beginners & Help section rather than the reputation board.

My opinion is that such topics should not be in the B&H board, no matter what someone thinks they could motivate others - this board should be for beginners and their questions, as well as for topics that can help beginners. It makes more sense for things like this to be in Reputation, although if I were to do something like that, a suitable board would be Off-topic.

The number of total or earned merits should never be the basic measure of one's reputation on the forum, although it has its place in the overall picture.

Yeah, well. I don't see the point of the thread in this section either. Maybe better in the B&H section, as it has been said, so it can encourage others. What OP's "achievement" tells me is that with a little effort and being a responsible person, one can gradually earn a reputation on the forum. At the end of the day it is like a big town where many people pass through, but those of us who stay in the town are a handful of people.

lovemayfamilis, I see what you mean about what the OP is doing to his current achievements. It may not be of any use for them previous generation account that have now managed to get hundreds to thousands of merit and have reached Legendary, but I can feel how happy the OP is getting the chance to get into the top 1000 merit users. This is the largest bitcoin forum ever to date, so it's an honor for us to be able to achieve something that  may still struggle to achieve [spammers] on this forum.

I support the OP to achieve higher rank in the future, I'd also support your opinion on not needing multiple thread like this in forum about achievements. But there's nothing wrong with all of that as it's an expression of the happiness new users get when they achieve something after the merit system.

OP, congratulations for your achievement, and let's do our best again and pass the challenge.

Honestly, I doubt thinking that where should I post this topic then later on I decided to post it here in reputation cause this thread is all about mine to share with everyone here in the forum and newbies get inspired when they read this. In the B&H section, there are many topics that newbies can gather more information in the forum and crypto.

I would suggest not to create a topic like this at all. But it has been created, and nothing can be done. You are number 990. Let's imagine those who are above you, -989 people. Have you ever wondered how many such topics there would be?
Why is this topic? Have you been taught that humility adorns a person? I could understand when someone created a similar topic when he entered the top ten. For example, Ratimov walks with giant strides, but I don't see anything like it. But as for you, I am sure that by creating such topics, sooner or later you will receive your recognition. Some people do not care what they say about them, just to draw attention to themselves.
Sorry, the topic is another fishing. Nothing more.

I think this topic more fit into the Beginners & Help section rather than the reputation board. So it would motivate more newbies as well. This isn't a small achievement at all for new members, because it's quite hard to earn merits for newbies here due to spammy behavior. Just keep your contribution and once a day you will discover yourself as a Legendary member.

Congratulations Shamm! I hope to see legendary next to your name soon!

Thank you mate for the support  I hope too that I will reach a legendary like you but I think that's not easy to achieve from 160 to 1000 which is 840 left but I'll try my best and I will be setting a goal for that. But now I'll focus on the next rank which is Sr.Member.

I think this shows how few forum members there are that are active and stay active.
Yep, the golden days were in 2018 particularly till Jan after that everything changed. Cheesy But sometimes its boring too without lot of active members because I felt there is lack of new threads so I don't learn something new everyday but theymos have no other choice than introducing such system since 2017 the number of spammers increased a lot due to the bigger recognition for crypto in the worldwide and also bounties gave opportunities to make few thousand dollars and there are stories who even earned millions with farm.

@OP, you no need to create new thread every time when you achieve something, you can maintain a single thread to post all your achievements in a single thread and keep them updated if you want someone to get motivated with such stories.

990th most earned merit, and you've earned a total of 160 so far?  Holy crap, if that's true then that tells me that there really aren't that many members who are accumulating a lot of merits.  There are certainly a lot of merits being sent, but there are also tons of Jr. Member accounts with 1 merit and probably a lot of accounts with fewer than 100 that have gone inactive for various reasons.

If you're in the top 1000 merit earners with only (and I don't mean to belittle your merit earning) 160 merits, then I'd guess that most of the merits in existence belong to the profiles of a relatively small number of members.  Crazy, isn't it?

I think this shows how few forum members there are that are active and stay active.

I think most people with 1-5 merit are probably gaming the system in some way. There are some people that open a thread asking a good question, receive some merit and leave once their question is answered.

I think probably, the merit system has filtered out a lot of spammers who will never rank up and have given up on the forum.

Unless you are very knowledgeable about bitcoin, it is very difficult to earn 160 merit, and it is not trivial to really understand bitcoin for most people.

Congratulations Shamm! I hope to see legendary next to your name soon!

Just concentrate on contribution to the forum rather than posting about merit. Read more and gain more knowledge, so you can contribute and distribute that knowledge among forum users.

I don't have many achievements to show you at the moment, but I can tell you that if you manage to have 990 in the rank of earned merit then you can also approach one of the highest current users of LoyceV achievements with a total of 8243 merit. This is just to give you a motivational boost that you shouldn't be satisfied with your current achievements so quickly.

And I did take a look at BPIP, which I don't normally visit, and when I checked the list of top merit earners that does seem to be the case.

Permission to post.

I don't know if it is okay to post this kind of topic but I am happy about this.
Using Bpip.org I found my profile and I am happy about this achievement cause I know nowadays it's hard to get merit.
Last October 24 I achieve full member and received a total of 100 merits that day and after 1 month and 6 days, I got 160 merits.
