So anyway, I applied as a merit source :)
Do you feel is it right to keep on meriting on our God Mr. Satoshi Nakamotto's OLD posts ? But I feel, people are wasting their merits by not considering young bitcoiner's QUALITY posts.
Yound bitcoiner's make "quality" posts? Did the world just turn upside down??

The restriction on newbies is to learn about crypto and comprehend properly before they start commenting and making posts about the same. Now the possible sources of waste can be two, namely:
1. Merit Sources - young bitcoiners need not worry about them wasting their merits because they will get refilled every month.
2. sMerit Holding Members (like me) - They are reluctant to merit posts like these - simply because "young bitcoiners" cant do anything to add to discussions but shitpost all the way.

One good example here must be (other than Satohis's post), Overview of Bitcointalk Signature-Ad Campaigns. People love to merit it.
Green with envy? Roll Eyes Merit is given to helpful posts. There are many other examples of it. You are nobody to question that.

In some perspective, I do find the people who all meriting it like they all want their name to be displayed along with some famous topics.
Wouldn't you if you were also in the same place?

If it is not good, is there any way to stop this ?
Irrelevant.

Why not put some upper cap for merits for each and every post ? I mean one post may have only some certain amount of merits.
Or disabling the merit button for a post after some time period (after few weeks) will be a solution here ?
Not likely to happen.

Why should we limit it? If someone spends hours writing or maintaining a thread then people should be able to merit it how they see fit. If people think a post or thread is worth a thousand merits then let them merit it so. It always blows my mind how many threads people are going to create complaining about merit just to try get some themselves or assure others don't get as much as they should.

Yes, big people do get easy merits due to their fame or big people's posts get more attentions hence more merits.

Or maybe they get them for writing helpful. Informative posts. People should try it themselves. You never know, you might get some merit.

It is an indisputable fact that, on average, old posts are more meritorious than new posts. The reason for this is the same reason that the merit system was introduced in the first place.

LoyceV on the road. Or couch.
I also think people leaving me merits is a waste, too, since I don't need them for ranking up.
Merit has another function than just ranking up: pointing out quality posts. I hope the forum will get a search function for posts with x merit some day, and when that happens, high ranking posts should show up too.

So merit should be given to you and all other members trying/proposing to remove it? Lol. I think next time I'll get some popcorn reading posts in META  Grin

Alright, while I discourage giving smerit to legendary members and dormant accounts since it is somehow a "waste" of it, i should respect others choice..
Merit system is made to reduce spam mainly by letting high quality posters to rank up easily..and since it is limited, i would prefer to be sent to them exclusively.
Personally, I have sent some to few legendaries or dormant accounts tho before regretting and stopping doing this at an early point, i respect satoshi and we are all grateful to him and the number of merit that he received doesn't mean in any case how much he is valuable. Same goes for other genuine members.

Do I think leaving Satoshi, or even Theymos, a bunch of merit is a waste?  Yes.  I also think people leaving me merits is a waste, too, since I don't need them for ranking up.  However, I would also argue that it's damn slim pickings around here as far as valid choices for recipients.  That may be somewhat of an exaggeration, as I know about two dozen members who I'd gladly give up all my merits to, but some people may not like the same posts I like, and they may well be sick of all the garbage posts.

They may be expressing gratitude for bitcoin and/or bitcointalk when they leave merits for Satoshi or Theymos--and that's their choice.  I wouldn't want to censor someone's opinion like that, especially when there's nothing wrong being done.  If people want to leave merits for posts that were made years ago, that's their prerogative.

Merit had another function than just ranking up: pointing out quality posts.
That's definitely true, but I always have the view that merits are a valuable component of people's accounts when they're trying to rank up, and I'm finding it very hard to separate that from the "thumbs up" function.

When merits are being generated from nothing and it has no upper limit, I guess wasting it not a big concern for this forum.

When wasting merits is not an issue then your topic brings no value here. Let's wait how veteran people will find your concern like good or nothing Tongue
If you remember, theymos already emphasized about not leaving sMerits idle.

Hence people spending their merits to famous topics rather than finding time to identify quality posts. Simply they make us of famous topics to run away from their responsibilities.

Even merits are an unlimited resource, not using it for the exact purpose is not a problem for this community ?

Matter of fact that merit is for crediting good posts. It does not matter if the post is old or new. As long as the post is liked by you and you think it worth giving merit and if you have sMerit to give them then it's your choice. Just make sure you are not abusing the merit system.

PS: You have a valid point though.
