R9 280x and 7970 are effectively the same card. I own a few of each and they both can get to 750 kHash equally well with modest overclocking and some tweaking of cgminer settings.

One thing to note, there are now Rev 1 and Rev 2 R9 280x cards out there. I believe the Rev 1 was literally a rebadged 7970, whereas I notice the newer Rev 2 cards come in a little lower voltage by default and run a bit cooler while maintaining the same hash rate.

There are many detailed comparisons out on the web with much more information than I can give you, but for mining scrypt I would take whichever card you can find cheaper. I might give the nod to the newer Rev. 2 280x's though if price is about the same as it does seem you gain a bit of power efficiency without having to mess around with under-volting yourself, especially with the cards you need to flash the BIOS to play with the voltages.

I am getting 7970s cheaper than 280x and its about $50-70 cheaper .... so considering what you said it would be best to buy a 7970 for the same hashrates then ........ btw what 7970 model are you using ? I think Ill go with 7970

I have 3 x R9 280x and all are stable at 726 Khash with more available.
They are the VRX type.

Wow that sounds impressive ... but I am thinking about quantities for approx same price
 (7970 x 4) = 2.6 Mhps (650 each avg)
 (280x x 3) = 2.2 Mhps (725 each avg)

So for approx the same price I would get more hashes with 7970 ... am i correct ?

Yes it is, a Sapphire Toxic R9 280X 3GB GDDR5 PCIe.

Besides the hashrate problem, it looks pretty cool, but... toxic Huh

Ok thanks ... will try to avoid that one for sure .... the guy said he has only sapphire .... if i buy that one I hope I don't get stuck with bad hashrates ..... So are you suggesting a 7970 ?

PS : i have a 7950 already its giving me 560 + a bit with tweaking

Hey,

I JUST HAVE TO GET A CARD in the NEXT 12 HOURS !!

From what I have read R9 280x is just a modified version of 7970 .

So R9 280x costs extra too . Should I opt for a 7970 or a R9 280x ?

Any reason to opt for one or the other ... seeing around seems like the hashrate looks somewhat the same (correct me if I am wrong).

Anybody who has experience or knows some technical details about hese cards ?

Regards

So was I, and I was disappointed. Something must be wrong with my card, maybe.

If I try optimized settings I only get HW errors even at -I 12, so I have TC at 8192, -g at best, etc. and I only got to 650 by OC to 1200 instead of 1150 native (it's winter time yay), it would only go up to 615 with default settings.

I have tried on 2 different rigs (AMD and Intel based), maybe I'll try on Linux/BAMT instead on Win7 when I get the chance.

I was under the impression a R9 280x would give about 700 (without much tweaking) ... also a 7950 is 25% more costly ... so thinking about economics too for the same hash rate.

I have both and the R9 280x gives me 650 while my 7970s are between 550 and 625.

If you don't plan reselling to gamers, go for a 7950, it's still the best value IMHO.

I had the same problem.  I ended up going with the 7970 3GB GHZ edition when it was on sale for $250.  The sale made it obvious.  Everything I have read says what you were saying.  How the 280x is just a rebranded 7970.  Get the cheaper 7970.

What about the hash rates that you are getting ?
