In the beginning they were very cheap to buy until people realized the profit they could make by selling them. Artificial inflation ended up making it useless to purchase.

Hmm.. thanks for giving me some tips. The city I live.. electricity cost is very high. I doubt I will be earning a cent from mining Altcoin then..

Especially then it is hard (or even impossible) to break even or earn a nice profit indeed. I think you are a bit late for Scrypt mining. In the beginning, it was even possible to make a nice profit with one or more GPU's. Especiaclly if you choose to mine a very new coin (which was easy to mine) and become worth something later on. Unfortunately these times are gone.

There was a period of about one week where these things were worth buying.
why?

Probably because the price of these devices was such low in relation to what you could earn with mining.

In other words, I think Hazards means that buying these devices almost always have lead to not reaching your ROI.

So I came across some USB miner on Amazon.com.  I wonder how do USB mining work and is it profitable. And also.. do this really have 330 MH/s? I don't think so.. 330 MH/s is too high.

Yes that's an "ancient" 330 MH/s asic miner. Please note that this is not a scrypt miner but an SHA bitcoin miner. Most likely you are not going to break even with that 0.33 GH, so it's only good for learning how to setup a rig but not for making any money.

I agree with you. Besides that, you can use it as an collectors item ^^.

330 MH/s on SHA256 ain't much. On the Scrypt algoritm it would have been a nice deal, but you are not likely to break even on SHA256 with these devices.
