I agree abbreviations can be confusing for new comers. From now on I will only refer to Mt. Gox as Magic: The Gathering Online Exchange.

Having just logged on I see a topic headed

Now I don't know about the rest of you but I don't spend 24 hours a day reading about bitcoin related news and forums and so before I could make any sense of the thread I had to google DPR + "silk road" to find out, the new silk road (SR) owner
"is fashioning himself as the "Dread Pirate Roberts," a reference to the book and film The Princess Bride, which the owner of the original Silk Road also used."

I think in general if you can do a quick search on the initials and get an idea of what it is, then that's probably an appropriate use.

I petty all the newbies that'll have to Google BTC to learn what it means. They may link it to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baptist_Theological_College_of_Southern_Africa
