Hmmmm.....it would seem so, but after reading this again:    http://www.apcupsd.com/manual/manual.html#installation-from-source    it looks like I'll have to install gcc and g++, unless they are already there. I guess I'll just have to find out the hard way.....might give it a go tonight then, with a spare SDcard at the ready in case of any disasters......I'll report back with my findings when I'm brave enough to give it a go.....was kinda hoping someone had already done it tbh.

Peace  Smiley

I believe gcc already installed  Smiley

Hi Zich, yeah - as mentioned above - I have a mixture of ether & USB UPS's all using the apcupsd software. I've tried several different UPS softwares over the years and have found apcupsd the most stable, user friendly & compatable. The APC Network Cards are also excellent.

Cool, then you are good to go. If apcupsd can run script command, then you can give shutdown command via ssh to target ip.

I haven't tried it, but when I was looking into it I dug into the "installing apcupsd on beaglebone" as thats the controller hardware on the S2.

Hi Biffa, yeah - I saw that too. Most of my Rigs/Servers/Miners UPS's are controlled via ether cable from my PC & Powerchute Network Shutdown - with only a few mining rigs using standalone UPS's via USB. I was planning on using the ether cable on the S1's for shut-down purposes via the PNS software on my PC, that way I avoid the USB issues you mention.

Did your UPS come with any communication card like SNMP card or serial card? You will need these card to use the apcupsd.

I was ex GE UPS engineer. In GE we had similar monitoring software called Jump DataShield.

Again, thanks for your input - but that is neither the answer or what I want to do.

So as to avoid any more confusion I will repeat the question:

I'd like to install apcupsd on my S2's via the cli - so was wondering if anyone here has done this yet, and if so, what apcupsd package they used & what their experiences were with it?

Thanks  Smiley

I haven't tried it, but when I was looking into it I dug into the "installing apcupsd on beaglebone" as thats the controller hardware on the S2, looks like people have lots of problems the USB ports on the Beaglebone, so I gave up trying, that and the stripped down lack of all compiling tools on the S2. YMMV of course and you may have better luck than i.

Thanks, but not true in my case. I actually wasn't asking if it was required, as I already know that it is - I asked if anyone had installed apcupsd on their S2 & what their experience was with it - but thanks for your input.
It looks like you are looking for a project to do on your miner.

In that case the sensible task is to modify the flash image:
1) boot with all file systems read-only
2) remount the fs read-write before the reconfiguration
3) remount the fs back to read-only after executing the configuration change
4) reconfigure syslogd (and other daemons) for logging to an external log concentrator
5) run the mining controller/concentrator on the UPS

Not only your flash storage will never be get corrupted but also you'll greatly increase its durability.

Obviously on Bitcointalk there always will be a sub-segment that treat coin mining as a status symbol.

For those I always advocate to look up the appropriate solution developed for audiophiles.

Edit: apcupsd and other UPS-communicating software only make technical sense when running on a server-grade hardware with error-correcting memory and the related processor circuitry fully supporting machine-check exceptions and recovery. Unless you change the controller in your miner that isn't the case. You'll just alter the failure modes and somewhat skew the probabilities of failures in your mining farm.

Edit2: I don't want to bump the thread: If you are really into running a mining farm on the UPS (e.g. you've already paid for it and cannot change the setup) then the proper tool to run is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network_UPS_Tools , which have both APC interface as well as support multiple devices per UPS and multiple UPS-es. N.U.T. also supports trivial UPS-ing via the cli: ssh/rlogin/telnet to each device and execute shutdown/poweroff/halt/telinit/whatever-else.

May not be required, but its a good ideia to protect your investment from a power surge, no?

Absolutely correct. Having to re-write images to corrupted SD cards then reconfigure my miners every time I get a power surge/brownout is just daft.

Mining hardware doesn't require a UPS.

UPS-es are bad surge protectors. Firstly they have higher internal power loses than a dedicated surge protector. Secondly they exacerbate small power surges (I'm speaking of the cheap "line-interactive" UPS-es, not the premium "dual-conversion" UPS-es).

Mining hardware doesn't require a UPS. The only time it writes anything to its file system is when you reconfigure it. At all other times it is pointless to run miner on a UPS, by design miner doesn't remember anything for longer than some seconds or half a minute at most.

Even if your UPS is already a paid for capital expense your operating expenses will be lower if you run your miner bypassing the UPS, because no UPS is 100% efficient.

Some smart Icelanders finally did the correct calculations and started offering professional coin miner hosting with electricity hookups that are explicitly free of UPS-es and backup generators. Smart private miners were doing that since the beginning of Bitcoin mining.

Greetings miners,

I live on a small, backwards thinking, stone age little island just off the coast of Europe owned by the Rothschilds where they haven't quite figured out how to supply a stable electricity supply to anyone who doesn't live in a city - it's called the UK. The result of this is that I have to use UPS's on all my gear. I try to use APC units as they are plentiful & cross platform compatible, so I use apcupsd on my Linux equipment & Powerchute NS on my Winblows PC where all my units are configured.

I have recently acquired a S2 unit that is running via a APC UPS, but it doesn't run any UPS software enabling it to "gracefully" shut down in the event of a prolonged power outage (of which there are plenty round here, as well as surges, brownouts, etc). I'd like to install apcupsd on it via the cli - so was wondering if anyone here has done this yet, and if so, what apcupsd package they used & what their experiences were with it? Or if it's even possible?

Thanks & Peace  Smiley
