Many things will work like a thermal grease. Back in the day when I was interested in overclocking I used to out of it and a friend told me to use a drop of vegetable oil.
The main purpose of thermal grease is not to allow air between the surfaces, because it's a good insulator. Oil does that and won't evaporate like water, you also don't have to spread it evenly.

use Nutella or mayonnaise, the result will be the same.
Seen tooth paste, butter and some other substances as thermal compound. All of them are working fine, but only during a limited amount of time.
