For several updates, there are changes to the network rules and/or have security updates. It is recommended to upgrade in those cases. If you have to decide, check the changelog[1].

So with all this Segwitx2 stuff going on has there been theese kind of changes that would require the latest version?
Im clueless for checking the changelog.

Thanks for the info :-)

Segwit2x was cancelled. There were improvements made to handle potential hard forks in preparation for segwit2x.

Anyway it's best to keep up with the latest version of electrum. New versions have bug fixes and new features.

Ive updated and everything went smoooth Smiley
wondering do I need to regularly back up wallet dat file or is that just a usefull feature and as long as I have my seed is unnecessary?
so should I keep 1 backup or 0 backups or....?
Your wallet file does contain the labels for the addresses. If you want to keep them, you can back it up.

No. Electrum is specifically designed for Bitcoin and with other coins, they may have different transaction generation method which would be incompatible with Electrum.

Sorry, I lost track of this thread since I became inactive.

I got it because everyone told me its unwise to keep on an exchange during 1 st Aug
so I havent updated once yet.... thats the only reason Im taking extra precautions.
Do I have to enter the seed at any point during the update or is it all automatic and old version uninstalled and replaced by new?
It's all done automatically. You don't have to touch anything.
One more thing... how do I extract priv key of the address I want to claim Bitcoin Cash for at a later time?
And do I have to get a wallet for it or is it possible to import on some exchange?
There's Electron Cash which is a fork of Electrum. Importing it will mean that you are trusting the software to take care of your seeds well. You can just download Electron Cash and import it just like how you would restore an Electrum wallet.

I would strongly advice you against importing it onto any exchange or online wallets. You can export individual private keys by going to Wallet>Private Keys>Export.

Thanks.
so version 2.8.3 can still be safely used since versions 2.9.0 and 2.9.2 are not mandatory?
does this sound right?
I've been using 2.8.3 till yesterday and it was fine. Honestly, as opposed to having headaches in newer versions, you are more likely to experience them in the older versions.

I would strongly recommend you to upgrade. As long as you have the seed stored well, you shouldn't experience any problem during or after the update.

I guess if anything would go wrong I could just reinstall the older version from the setup file I downloaded the frist time..
Thanks alot ranochigo Smiley

Most of the updates that Electrum has released aren't mandatory. It's definitely recommended to update since there are bugs that are fixed in every update with the addition of new features.

For several updates, there are changes to the network rules and/or have security updates. It is recommended to upgrade in those cases. If you have to decide, check the changelog[1].

Hello I am wondering if updating to the latest version is completely neccessary?
Whats the verdict on using older versions?
Generaly this should be fine? or am I deluded?
I have a small amount on an older version which id much rather spend first before updating than risk something going wrong and than having the stress of fixing it Tongue
what are the changes in the last couple of versions? nothing major? or some cardinal important stuff and i should update?
Thanks for info guys Smiley
