I recommend using the good powered usb risers. These perform a lot better for me and have few problems with them. I have a working build currently that's been running problem free with the following parts.
Intel Haswell Processor (LGA 1150)
Biostar HI-FI H81S2 Motherboard
Higher quality USB riser cables. Make sure you use the thick usb cables.
EVGA 750TI Superclocked x6
750 Watt Power supply, Gold rated for less wasted power.
8 GB of memory
I have gone thru various motherboards and risers and have finally settled on this build, as it is the most stable yet.
My rigs are pulling 360 watts at the wall using killowatt mining x11. I get about 2600 khash/s for each card.

I had the same problem and installing 1 by one resolved it.
Try using Windows 8.1.
There's an issue, IIRC, in which Windows 7 can't detect more than 4 cards (8 cores).
Since you haven't specified the GPUs you're using, I assume its a dual core ones, so that might be the problem.

It's a driver issue. I had 5 7950's on Win 7 working fine.
install one by one and let w7 recognize them first, take a while up to 5-10 mins
I have an Asrock z87 Extreme 9/ac. I can get 4 cards running properly without risers.
I f I use any number of risers, powered or not -- Windows 7 will either not boot all the way to desktop, or it will boot but one or more of the cards will have a code 43 error.
I've ordered new riser cables, just to see if the one I bought were crap...but can anyone think of something that can help make this setup work with cables?
note:when I say it "won't boot", I think it actually is booting -- but I can't see video. I suspect this because on the next reboot I'll get the "windows did not load properly" message.

Some motherboard are not compatible with riser, especially the new model.
Try using Windows 8.1.
