This is indeed a very viable use case of blockchain technology - to be able to utilize its immutability and transparency characteristics in order to combat counterfeits! A blockchain based authentication system like the one mentioned in that article could very well serve almost all industries that are affected by counterfeiting so that I think once its rolled out, I assume sales of counterfeit products would likely go down!

Perhaps I'm now more optimistic that this kind of blockchain applications would be common within the next few years which could be a chance to let ordinary people be the real benefactors in the hope that they may likely support this paradigm once they experience its main advantages. Imho.
