You might want to check out the alt mining threads for this set up.
I'm pretty sure my radeon 7950 wouldn't make a dent in a bitcoin pool.
It would if it was empty...

I recently built a PC for gaming that's equipped with an EVGA 1GB GDDR5 740 GT. I got GUI Miner set up and my account with Slush running. I started mining and I'm only getting 55 mhash/s. I've heard of the old 9800gt's getting more. And yeah, I know I won't be making much or maybe anything, but I just wanted to try it out. The question is is that rate normal for my card?

GPU mining era already end. You just wasting your power.
Nowaday you need asics miner.

Have you tried using different types of miners?  File>New Miner and then choose your type of miner.  I remember when I first started I used GUIMiner and I had to mess around with the different miners available to get a good hashrate.

How do you check your flag settings? Sorry, I've never mined before. But the 9800GT averages 30, so I think my card should be getting quite a bit more.

why?   740 GT isn't particularly high end, the benchmark is maybe 2x higher than a 9800GT.

you would be losing money, rather than making much or anything

Check your card rate against benchmarks here
https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Non-specialized_hardware_comparison

If you think the mining rate is low, check your flag settings and tweak them.
