since i started investing bitcoins in various things, I'm having to re build my wallet a lot. does anyone know why?
If you have currently no bitcoins in your wallet, you can just delete that file and replace it with your backup and If you have some bitcoins in this wallet as well, backup that wallet file as well, or send all the coins to an address from your backed up wallet.

If you're using windows, upgrade to Bitcoin Core 0.11.2[1]. You need to wait a few minutes till the shutting down window disappear before turning off your computer completely.

What do you mean by rebuild your wallet?  as in the blockchain info?

Are you using bitcoin core?

In addition to all that has been said.  Run only one Bitcoin core or wallet that downloads to your computer on each box.  Sometimes two wallets will argue over the port or more precisely the routing might be giving it a hard time.  It is not a perfect system, but it will always catch up if you have everything the way that it is supposed to be configured.

You should name the wallet you are using. My main wallet software is Multibit and I need to download the blockchain very often because it does not sync completely anymore. The reason is because I usually do not shut down the software properly. I guess the reason for your problem is similar.

Typical reason is an unclean shutdown. Any infos in the debug.log[1] that might help?
