I usually run 4gb for up to 6 gpus.  But I have ran one 6 gpu unit on 2gb when I had one stick go bad, using windows 7.  With linux I would imagine the requirement would be even less.

thanks, repairguy.

On a 500$ budget thats easy
semperon cpu 35   (Best mining cpu)
pos case         25   (buy any atx case)
hd 7850         200 (GPU)
PSU               7150  (750 watt)
hard drive (sata)       25    (any mem works)
ram                         50   (4 gigs)
mobo                      75   (am3+ slot)

MIND YOU YOU WOULD NEED TO USE LINUX
AND IT would need to be wired in, not wirless
also if you would want to expand you would need a new gpu
OR buy a rig from me. Ill build one custom tailored for you with al mining software loaded up and ready.
We can work out price pm me.

I've just been doing a bit of research on GPUs and came to the same conclusion, that the 7850 gives the best bang for the buck, when you include power draw. What makes the Sempron the best CPU? Just because it's got a low power draw?

because they are cheap and widely available.

makes sense. the other question this thread made me think about is amount of RAM; is there a suggested minimum to mine with, and does that increase with multiple GPUs on one system?

Gpu's have there own memory
But as far as a budget rig is suggest that card. When building a full scale rigs i prefer 290's as the hash per card. think of it this way.
Budget rig   (7850)                     Built rig (290)
BASE  300$                               660$            Base              Built
1 card +200$                           +500$         HASH .8/$      .689/$
2 cards +400$ (need new psu)   +500$        HASH .88/$      1.03/$
3cards  +200                             +500$       HASH 1.09/$     1.11/$

So in the end your hash per $ is better with a built rig on 290's
with 7990's i think on 2 cards your hash/$ is assuming on the built base is 1.15/$ but the cost is 1k per card

I think the new Asus R9 290(X) ´s are a good investment but the standard fan is bad
(can we maybe manually change it like a cpu-cooler ^^?)

Do you already have a mainboard? with the "Asrock H61 Pro" board http://www.asrock.com/mb/intel/h61%20pro%20btc/
you can build your rig up to 6 grafikcards thats nice Wink

Greetings

I do not have any of the 290(x) cards myself, so not sure on the fan replacements. I have Asus 280x cards and like them a lot, I also have 7950 twin frozr's which are also excellent cards. Wish I could get more of those!

If it is 500 for the whole complete rig, then I think it would be very inefficient and you would be better of buying crypto directly. If you are spending 500 on a gpu , then either
ASUS R9290-4GD5 Radeon R9 290 4GB 512-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 Video Card 519.00 at negg or the 280x cards which are 100.00 less.

You have 500.00 for the whole rig or you want to spend 500 on a gpu?

hi
i wanted to build a scrypt mining rig. but with just 1 graphics card as i dont want to invest much right now.

can you suggest me which is the best graphics card (for the price) available on amazon.com and how much hash power should i expect.
also, after i get the card, what all will i need to get the rig mining? will i be able to do it or will i have to go to some computer shop?

thanks a lot!
