Can be Bittman himself involved in this newsletter? You rule out that possibility? Not me. Perhaps this is a creative way of advertising. I don't think that's the worst deception from Bittman. It seems to me that they took part in the attack 51% and they are exactly after the preliminary sale of asics include them in the work and increase the complexity of the networks. Such actions have caused damage to all customers who can not refuse to pre-purchase.
Seems to be quite unlikely. Bitmain earned 4 billions(!) USD in profit last year, and they don't need to be connected to this scam, which can ruine the reputatinon.

Ya... E9+ scam that I received was from webmaster@bitmain(s)tech.com... now is a "common" phishing scam... but with our real data again! Angry

Received it as well.  This is the same data they got from the previous attack which Bitmain informed about last autumn, I am sure, as they have still same incorrect data from me, for example.

Its come to the point you cant trust an email from anyone. Any of your contacts can be spoofed, the only way to find out the truth is to reply to the email, to see where it goes. This can be done with phone numbers too.

I also received such a letter from Bittman. But I haven't received any emails from scammers. I don't think there are. This is a disguised PR campaign from Bittman. Nobody saw the scammers but everyone knows that Bittman plans to release S10 and S11. Good idea. Bravo Bittman.

Yes... we agree on parts and I know that phishing emails happens all the time. But I've never seen anything like that... I never received a fraudulent email with the sender showing up as '[email protected]' or '[email protected]'... is always '[email protected]', '[email protected]' or something like that...

In last email from the real Bitmain they wrote:

There are many different types of software that are able to spoof and edit the sender's email address. The user is able to configure the domain name to send out emails to appear as [email protected].

These scammers act very "professionally"  Angry

That's SO SO bad... in SO many levels!!!! It's unbelievable!!!!! Shocked Angry The email I received was from Bitmain's official email!!!! It's very very easy to fall in this fraud (even for experienced miners)!!! I feel SO bad for the people who fell in that shit.............. Cry
The way it was done, Bitmain is guilty and must take the consequences for it. It's not fair that people suffer such astronomical damage as that. No doubt that Bitmain has responsibility for what happened...
How is this Bitmain's fault? I don't agree with everything they do but I've dealt with them extensively for a while and I have always been treated well by them. They are not the Villains people would like to portray them as. In the end we are all responsible for our decisions. Can't blame others. Life's not fair. Never was and never will be. This is a very difficult space to navigate in. It's new and there are no rules. We ALL have the ultimate responsibility to protect ourselves and others when we can, but in the end, WE are responsible. That's why I made this thread. To hopefully save a few people. Truth is, people get greedy and make bad decisions clouded by greed. On BOTH sides of the fence. Just be vigilant and don't lose your discipline. SCAMS are getting MORE and MORE sophisticated because there is a LOT of money at stake. Look at this ASICminer.com scam that is going on. I don't think that's even a real company. Yet they have videos and websites and idiots putting phony reviews on YouTube. The less people that fall for this shit the less these maggots will gain. Be careful and be VIGILANT.

No man, you didn't understand... how many times have you received an email from a BIG company (from their REAL servers), but was actually a fraud? If that were common and "acceptable", the email would have been extinguished a long time ago... The problem is not the email as vulnerable technology... many serious huge companies work every day with much more important data and money by email with their customers and partners. The problem is the lack of security on Bitmain servers! That's why Bitmain is guilty for that. If you had received an email from Nvidia's OFFICIAL email for example, with all your REAL data (including your address!!!) offering some kind of discount and you were fooled by it (again... coming from the OFFICIAL email with your REAL data)... the reason for this would have been purely a security breach of Nvidia and you can be sure that if you proved to have made the payment, they would take some action to reimburse you and everyone who was harmed. Any serious company would do that. If the email had been sent from another server, not from Bitmain's email server, then you would be right... But is NOT the case!
It was NOT sent from Bitmain's Server. The Emails just had the NAME of the Bitmain address masked onto the title. If it really was Bitmain's server you could reply to the email. You could not reply to these emails.  This happens constantly with other "large companies". We get scam-mail from PayPal, Amazon, Apple, Google email look a likes, ALL THE TIME. It's the way of the World my friend. Never underestimate how big of pieces of shit human beings are. Always have been and always will be.

I recommend that everyone at least active the 2-factor authenticator and change the password on Bitmain site asap.
Bitmain has been telling us to do that for almost a year. Just to be fair. really, in any secure environment....why would you NOT?

Absolutely... I've changed my password several times. Change your password again even if you changed it less than 1 month ago and be aware that if you have a Bitmain account, your data can easily leak at any time.

Bitmain sent official email about this fraud, at last!

---------------------------------
Dear customers,

There has been another wave of phishing emails sent by fraudsters. If you do receive such emails offering Antminer models that are not available on shop.bitmain.com, such as an Antminer S10 or S11, please do not make any payment to the email senders.

There are many different types of software that are able to spoof and edit the sender's email address. The user is able to configure the domain name to send out emails to appear as [email protected].

We would like to remind our customers once again that Bitmain does not promote or solicit sales through emails or phone calls. All orders are only accepted through our official website, https://shop.bitmain.com/

For announcements and news from Bitmain, please follow our blog.

Thank you for your support and cooperation.

Regards,

The Bitmain team

The email I received was from Bitmain's official email!!!!
In fact - NO.   Try to reply to that emai, and you will see that it put into the Receiver field not BM email.  But if you look into original email, you will see that it indeed looks like as sent from Bitmain.

There is a "display" name on  emails, which can be different from the sender's email - for example:  "John Smith".   But when you reply it - you will see smth like [email protected]   (just an example).

So fraudsters just substituted the "display" email with the real Bitmain's one.

Quote from: cointelegraph.com
CNBC writes that according to a report published Feb. 21 from investment research company Bernstein, the four-year-old Bitmain reportedly made between $3 and $4 billion in operating profit in 2017, whereas Nvidia, founded 24 years ago, made about $3 billion during the same period.

A company that makes more profit than tech giant like Nvidia, cannot afford to hire top level security experts to keep their systems away from hackers. It is infuriating really, these hacker scumbags now have all my info including my address and phone number. WTF Bitmain?

Yes I am not surprised by this at all.

Even after they got hacked and all that info was leaked, they barely provided an update. They didn't even specify what exactly was leaked out. All they said was some database got hacked.

Given how poorly their website was designed and operated and same with their bad Antpool, I am not surprised that it was easily hackable.

Pretty much all their products are half-ass assembled and produced. Nothing quality like the old Antminer S1/S2/S3 they used to make.

Very true, they are in the business because of greed and nothing else, they don't give a shit about their customers. I checked their website to see Antminer D3 on sale for around 300 dollars, I remember the price when it released was 2699USD (excluding psu/shipping). May be I am judging too quick, but thats an insane price drop. It is just ridiculously unfair to those who bought like 100s of these during release.

Antminer D3 (2699 USD)

Gentlemen

Thank you for this thread - I just got an email with a PDF last night,
In my head I had sold all the S9's and sent everything I have for these S11's

BUT THEY DO NOT EXIST

So thanks everyone, and well done to me for doing due diligence.

Happy mining all!

Wow, those numbers are crazy.  Maybe now with their reputation on the line they'll start hiring top security talent so things like this don't happen again.  Thanks for the warning, I've heard multiple people getting compromised.  I wonder why they haven't made an official announcement about it, warning customers.
I sent to Bitmain request for explanation, but no reply.   Same scammer continue to send email nearly every day , with the same toopic and text.

DO NOT FALL FOR IT. All purchases are done at Bitmain website and this is not. All emails from bitmain are from " webmaster@bitmaintech" not [email protected].

then wtf they know our email.

inside job?
Bitmain was hacked sometime last year. They sent all registered users emails requesting we change our passwords. They DID alert their customer base of the situation. The scumbag thieves seem to have "older" information. In a few cases, myself included, they have an old mailing address for me. Pretty amazing that the dirt bags waited this long to hatch their little scheme. It's very likely that the thieves were born from and raised by cheap street level prostitutes. They have probably been very busy cleaning up after their mother's sexual messes day in and day out.

I can promise you that you will NOT see a SHA 256 miner from anyone, let alone Bitmain that processes 79 THs while pulling 2000 watts or less. I'm no hardware expert but I'm pretty sure that is WAY beyond impossible at today's density. Even 7nm.

That's what made me suspect the email. That efficiency is technology from the future. Many people are not familiar with SHA256 miner usual specs and get tricked.

i think it was an ex employee or employee with access to the systems, database, dns etc.
Everything is so correct that the s11 specs might also be correct and when released the diff will kill all the s9 and below models

This is kinda funny. We've all heard complaints about dusty miners looking a bit used. And now Bitmain sold your farm's location to crooks.

Remember when those farms were robbed in Iceland? The stolen asics turned up in China, ready to begin their journey all over again.

Yup. Me too. Pretty messed up. Truth is....no one will even pursue these scum. They will also make a LOT of money off of unsuspecting idiots.

They could be pursued, if you are willing to spend an amount more than they scammed you for. These are simple "hacks" that can easily be traced. I'm sure anyone pulling off scam emails like this aren't CIA-grade operatives and will most likely easily be traced by the right company. If you have been scammed, all the more reason, please do not hesitate and passively dismiss issues like this. Make an effort and go to your local cybercrime agency. Do something about this so they don't do it to more people. Help make crypto better.

Anybody knows how do scammers achieve sending email from Bitmain domain?
-snip-img-
Bitmain's domain isn't "bitmaintech", plain sight obvious.

Making a non "@gmail/@yahoo" email is quite simple. Ex. I have an email account [email protected] where the spam goes.
And the hacker just bought a domain that sounds like the original, then he made an email account using that domain.

Example: bitmain.com, the hacker bought bitmaintech.com then he created [email protected] as the fake administrator email account to scam noobs.
This makes sense because the first one they sent to me was from [email protected]. Then they changed it. They also had my old address on the email. So whatever they have in data is not particularly "current" it would seem.

They didnt spam my new bitmain account, so it seems true that they only have older customer details, i remember this hack last year, it was ridiculous that it happened in the first place, they make a killing yet they cant protect customer data.

That seriously sucks man. I admit i got pretty amped up when I saw it, but realized that everything about this process was outside of Bitmain's way of doing business. That and the 79Ths claim. That's what really tipped me off. It's just not possible while pulling 1400 watts or anywhere near that.

[email protected] is bitmains email. Ive been getting legitimate emails from this address for ages, thats why its so convincing, especially if you save this email as a contact / priority sender.
Interesting that email shows the sender's email as [email protected] - BUT if you try to reply it, it will put another address for the receiver:  [email protected]

Obviously there is a trick, in which scammers succeeded to put   [email protected]  on the "sender's" field of their emails, somehow.    BUT email arrives not from it, but from no.rply@ ...  , and when you reply it, it put real address from where it arrived - [email protected] Roll Eyes

In any case,  in order to send email from address belogning to domain bitmaintech.com - you need to posess that domain, don't you ??

Just got this email. Bitmain-style looking and showing source as [email protected], which is a real Bitmain address. Two red flags:

  • 79.5 TH/s @ 1400W is years in the future.
  • Nothing googlable about any S11 ready to ship.

Note that faking the source email address is trivial, but what points to Bitmain having been robbed bare of user data is that all personal details are on the email. Or maybe scammers are using data from last year's(?) hack.

Ouch ok, so it must be an inside job or a sophisticated hacking incident and the attacker must have stolen more than customer's emails and contacts.
Otherwise, the "other guy" was right.

Awhile ago they did have a security issue, they told everyone to change passwords / enable authentication. That data they got must be these emails.
The first statement suggests that the hacker(s) didn't just fetched the emails but also Bitmain's admin accounts (and administration rights?) as well.

This is more serious than I thought.

Scammers use data from the shipping addresses. I conclude this from the fact that they use my friend's name when greeting me in email.  Grin

With BM i use a shipping address to my friend's location, for some reason.  So scammers don't have access to the inner BM database, where my real name is mentioned.

Bitmain was not hacked. They sold your details.

Awhile ago they did have a security issue, they told everyone to change passwords / enable authentication. That data they got must be these emails.

The attachement just gave you the Crypto payment bar codes. Yeah......79 Ths with 1400 Watts. LMAO!! The sad thing is....as absurd as that claim is, the profitability of those metrics is only $24.00 a day with .10 per KWH. Which means......that.....when the REAL new S11 or whatever they name it comes out, it will be well inside of that. I doubt that from 16nm to 7nm will get more than 30 THs at 1400 watts. Bottom line.....even the NEW technology will NOT be very exciting. Pretty depressing.
New bitcoin miner from Japan company GMO which is on 7nm tech process, and it produces only 24Th/s with nearly 2000 Watts consumption - which is about 15% more efficient that S9.    So yes, the NEW technology will NOT be very exciting.

Received same email, but never opened attachment,  very convincing, except for the 74-79th bit lol Wouldnt be surprised if bitmain name the new sha256 miner a s12 or 13 cause of this fraud.

Just wait for official sale at bitmain.com, there are a lot of scammers trying to get your money!
As far as I know, bitmain didn't pronounce anything about S11/S11+ yet, it is just rumor for now, but there are some evidence that it is true, but we need to wait official release to buy or we can be scammed.

Anyway, the competitor GMO B2 is available for sale.

Situation is complicated, they know how many miners you have, location, models etc. Can be stolen if its not on a safe location.
And bitmain know the data was compromised since the first day and still no official statement.
