When will you guys learn. Use a virtual machine for .exe files you don't trust, even if a virus scan doesn't show anything

Good point  -  http://aws.amazon.com/  is a good one - they have a "Free" teir which you can get a basic server setup on - its very light weight on the spec but it will be a life saver if you find out one of the wallets you downloaded is a nasty!

With regards to backups - If someone has stolen your Wallet.dat file and you have backed up the Wallet.dat - what happens when they hacker empties the stolen version of the file?

Previously i have moved my wallets around (for Pennies) and have ended up opening 2 wallets that were using the same Wallet.dat file  - if i sent coins from one of them the coins vanished from the other as well. I had assumed this was supposed to happen otherwise you could just keep copying a wallet.dat file  with coins in it, send the coins, load a back up, send the coins again and keep going until you have run out of backups!.

So im assuming it would be best practice to create a new wallet and transfer the coins over to the new wallet before the hacker can empty the copy of the wallet that was stolen.

Could someone let me know if the bit in red is a sensible thing to do.

I lost coins last night, pretty much any coins I didn't back up. I kept trying to get a certain wallet to load, let alone sync, then crash-bang went the computer, and all my appdata wallet.dats were gone. I had just thrown a bunch of different coins up for trade, so the blow wasn't quite so bad. I've learned, #1 do the backups onto my thumbdrive, and #2 be hella more careful. I still don't know if I lost them because of that one wallet that wouldn't work, or if it was from something else. Just glad I backed up my better coinage.

Note to self, Don't download a wallet that is completely unrelated to the coin being offered as a reward.

you guys really do need to start being more careful, there are far to many con-men out here to simply download any file!

Sorry to hear about the loss, What antivirus/spyware/malware programs do you have installed? if you don't have anything INSTALL some!
