I did always find it a little odd that the post you are meriting doesn't appear as a preview or quote somewhere on the page. It could even be a feature you could toggle for those that don't want it.

Ah the ipad mini 5 can do weird shit. 

I simply don't understand how it happened. It is annoying  that he got some merits when he should be tagged

Were you opening multiple tabs then going to merit them? Easy to get confused and open the wrong one, especially if you only accidentally clicked the merit link while scrolling. You would have to take note of the receivers name, and I know I rarely double check I have the right person... never really though to.

I've fatfingered merits once or twice... happens to the best of us. I don't believe there is a system glitch that would send merits to the wrong post.

I did in the early days of the system, and I think it was because I'd reloaded the merit pop-up screen after giving someone merits--it's been so long that I can't recall what happened, and I do believe that problem was fixed (but I could be wrong).

Not a big deal if you've got enough merits to send, though it's definitely annoying to hand out extra merits when you didn't mean to.  I don't think it was your fat fingers, btw.  Mine are like shredded pepperoni sticks and I still manage to not make the mistake I made way back when.
