[our legal requirement to be responsible with our money] has been interpreted to mean that we do not accept "artificial" currencies...

I once heard of a term that means using language like this to say something while avoiding giving a source.  When I learned about this, I learned it was a bad thing to do.

I think that term was called "weasel words".

Let me think... where did I learn about "weasel words" and why they are bad.

Oh yeah, that's right.  I learned about this on Wikipedia!  It's a Wikipedia policy, shorthanded as WP:WEASEL, but detailed at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WP:WEASEL .

Isn't the USD more artificial than bitcoin?  Is bitcoin the ONLY non-artificial currency out there?

Bitcoin: An Idea Worth Spending
Didn't we all go through all this last year about this time? I do recall a New York chapter of Wikimedia accepting BTC. Would somebody be so kind as to hunt that thread down and post its link for all to see?

People have already donated BTC to New York chapter of Wikimedia, yes  Smiley

110.05137157 Bitcoins have been donated to the NYC Chapter of the Wikimedia Foundation, thus far (this is a live counter). Click here to get their donation address.

I love their live counter.

Their address: 1F4Ka3nHH3Ef1P2f66AwLEqwHo6J9wFHKC

To continue this exponential grown, we only need two chapters this year to start accepting BTCitcoin (four next year, etc.).

No one found it hilarious that since all currency is "artificial", they wouldn't be able to accept donations in any other form than barter?

^this, hope they reconsider though. People like donate by whichever means are available to them so wikimedia can't be "picky" about it.

That was a poor choice of words on their part.

Agreed. People need to be more careful to say things which could not be quoted out of context. Roll Eyes They actually said:
Quote from: Wikimedia Foundation
[our legal requirement to be responsible with our money] has been interpreted to mean that we do not accept "artificial" currencies...
They then go on to explain that this is not actually what they mean, and that they may consider accepting Bitcoin in the future, presumably once their lawyers/accountants figure out the relevant legal requirements. The thread title is quoting them as saying the exact opposite of what they actually said. Angry
