So is it not obvious that there is more going on here than meets the eye?
MtGox has been under investigation/indictment for a year. They've had bank accounts seized. Even if you think it's just some losses due to hackers, you can't put hacking attacks past the US government, either. The FBI admittedly controlled LulzSec during many major Bitcoin attacks, including the last attack on MtGox.

We can only guess what really happend and what actions they are taking at the moment.. They're not like an open book to us...

That's all Mt Gox needs to write to the people who stole from them. Chances are most of them are not hardened criminals, but kids who stumbled upon the trick to open the Gox faucet by mutating withdrawal transactions as they were sent out , and waiting for Gox's brain-dead code to resend after a few minutes.
I am not fond of Gox, and I don't have any funds there, but I think they should be able to retrieve a big chunk of their lost coin just by asking people nicely to return them.
