Aside from radio meshes (typically wifi) i have seen little which could actually replace internet. And yes it would be great to have something like that, but few people see the point. Yes in an ideal world, every one would have bought an open mesh node in their home, which is essentially a neighborhood wifi. But it is slow and laggy, and people fail to see the point vs commercial internet. But it would hurt you to purchase one and leave it running, while optional, you could connect your node to the internet so that it gets a bit more "attractive", and have it as a form of "guest wifi".

Then after reaching "critical mass" we could start doing serious things, such as running bitcoin nodes on it etc.

If your suggestion is that Big Tech companies should be weeded out of the internet, that's not necessary because they don't actually own the internet. Internet connectivity is owned by ISPs who sell you bandwidth to upload and download with.

I think we have a new internet that is not owned by a few people but where everyone owns their own data That's the broadband line of the Internet. It can be found everywhere in the world and the person can communicate freely himself and can return it if not required It is very powerful and the person can use it as he wishes.

We need a new Internet which is not owned by a few centralized companies. We need an Internet co-owned by all of us, where everyone is equal, where everyone owns their own data. An Internet which is much more green, which is available everywhere in the world.

An Internet which goes back to where it all started – a network, connecting people who can freely communicate, who are not manipulated, and who can use this network to build out their digital lives in all freedom and neutrality.

This Internet needs to be self-driving & self-healing. It's the only way how a global network of capacity can be created. Since people are not needed to manage the network, the costs are lower and security is much stronger.
