So if I quote and preview that post from hugeblack, his second code includes [left] and [/left] tags. If I change those to [ltr] and [/ltr], it displays correctly, at least for me.

I might be wrong, but including the code between the tags [ltr] and [/ltr] should do this for you.
this does not solve the problem see here (the second code) because dir="rtl" in .post div change direction any element inside to right
