To add to the list:

1) Go to device manager, view hidden devices and delete all unused (ghost) display drivers.

2) Bump up windows VM by say 8 gb.

3b) In some undetectable way the card maybe overheating. Redo the thermal paste.

3a) Remove the fan assembly and inspect for dust clumps.

Lottery tickets:

a) install AMD display driver 16.9.2

b) With no power, hand spin each fan to see if they seem sluggish spinning down as compared to new.

c) Check MB settings. Set Pcie everthing to gen 1. Shutdown: serial port, parallel port, unneeded USB ports

d) Remove MB battery for a 1 hour and then install, reboot

I'm using claymore (tried 9.8,9.7 and 10.0) and have tried drivers 16.9, 17.4 and the beta block chain one, i've downloaded furmark but the card is always not the main driver so furmark just stresses the main driver and leave it
I don't quite get what you are saying here, what do you mean that it just stresses the main driver? Do you have multiple GPUs? If so, run FurMark in fullscreen, it will benchmark both cards if Crossfire is enabled.
My 2 GPUs also crash when trying to mine with a specific Algorithm, try using Nicehash and test different algorithms.

This most probally sounds like a faulty card to me
Things you can probally try :
  • Try Reinstalling Windows
  • Try Clearing Bios of motherboard and of graphic card
  • Try Different Drivers Versions
  • Try installing msi afterburner or some other overclock appliction and try to underclock
  • Try Different PC/rig
  • Ask/tell the vendor that you are having this problem , who knows maybe he might know something and help you out

What software are you using to mine? What drivers are you using? Did you try running a game or something to stress the GPU? Download FurMark and benchmark your card, if that works fine, it's the miner or the drivers who are not compatible with your miner.

@Gunna First i thought it was a bios gone wrong so i flashed the original bios again, still nothing

@Atrax the card is getting detected only if its not in the display, if its alone on the rig, the rig does not even boot. and claymore hangs on "initializing OpenCL for gpu 0" it doesn't even start mining

Sounds like the card is failing under load but is still being detected.

Are your trying to overclock the card? Check the afterburner setting make sure they are correct.

Custom bios installed that's not tweaked correctly?

Heat issues or a fualty card is also possible.

Hello, so i bought a used msi rx 470 off this forum, the card is very weird, if i plug it in a rig the driver sees it, GPU-Z sees it, msi afterburner sees it, but once i start any miner they fail and the rig freezes, if i try to use the card as a display driver it fails and the rig doesn't start, if i try to use only this card on the rig it doesn't even boot and the vga error led lights up, does anyone know what's wrong here?
