The best troll posts are effective because there is an undeniable and often uncomfortable truth to them. This makes them not only amusing but also often quite valuable to my way of thinking. It also means that coming up with a good troll post takes some effort in terms of observation and creativity.
It is pretty well documented that there is an active and healthy campaign on the parts of various organizations to manipulate public perception by producing synthetic activity on forums. There is even software which has been sold to corp/gov organizations which facilitate this by allowing one operator to marshal many personas. It would be surprising if such a thing were NOT in use here on bitcointalk.org by this time, but most of the production possible out of this group of actors is not what I would consider trolling. Or at least not very effective or 'good' trolling.
