They are ignorant and will most likely just ignore them. Well it's worth a try.

An even bigger thing one would hate about Western Union is that they often require ID when transferring money to someone.

What would they use this ID for? To find out who is sending money to whom. That's what. Is that private? Not in my view, it isn't.

With Bitcoin you don't require an ID. You just create a wallet, and either mine or purchase bitcoins, and send 'em on their merry way. That's about as private as it gets. Sure, the transaction is stored forever in the blockchain, but remember that the authorities see nothing more than a bunch of cryptographic hashes so the authorities would have a bitcoin...*cough cough* um, I mean bit of a hard time finding out who is sending what to whom for what.

Eg. person 1aAbBcCdDeEfFgGhH sending X.XXXXXXXX bitcoin to person 1jJkKmMnNpPqQrRsStTuUvV for some thing-a-ma-[insert hysterical laughter here]-jig...

So this is great if you're trying to buy something not quite legal. With Western Union, if some nosy geek sees that you've sent XXX amount of dollars to someone who has been found to have been selling no-so-legal articles...guess what happens? Trust me there are plenty of them, yes, in Western Union in fact that system is AUTOMATED so you don't even need to be a damn geek.

That information gets duly passed on to the appropriate authorities, whether that be within minutes, hours or perhaps days of your transaction. Either way it probably doesn't matter much since by the time you would receive your parcel, your ID information gets recorded, your postal address is likely within that information and will be watched,  your parcel is picked up and seized and the FBI kicks your doors down and busts your silly ass.

Bitcoin...who would'da thunk!
And touch of PGP with your emails to that special someone, just in case someone else other than the intended recipient might be reading those messages.

Huh, Western Union - were they still around? Thought they went the way of the dinosaurs.
not until Average Joe both know what Bitcoin is and has a wallet / is prepared to get himself one when explained how much better it is. Sadly we're far from there in my experience. I do think WU will be one of the first companies to go extinct due to Bitcoin, but that might take a couple of years

I agree if I recall correctly it took 5 to ten years from blockbuster to be superseded by netflix so similarly the same thing might occur with Western Union
Patience is a virtue. I'm sure that Bitcoin will, one day, get them out of business.

While we are at it, lets do the same to Coinbase because they take a fee when I deposit or withdraw money. How dare a business I can choose to use or not use charge a fee!

If you don't like the business, don't use it. Badgering it like an asshole over Bitcoin doesn't help.

A Western Uniion survey. How quaint!
Like dinos taking a weather survey 5 mins before asteroid impact.... Wink

At least they will come to know how much does the general public hates them. I don't think they will change after reading the responses, but at least saner voices needs to be heard.

True enough although they used to be useful then again they might go the way of Polaroid when digital cameras appeared if the company is slow to adapt

As much as I would like to avoid Western Union it still comes in handy. I can with draw internationally USD and get charged $17 from my bank. Or I could send $500 from my US bank account and be charged $12. Also the advanced chip in my ATM card means that it does not work in some 3rd world countries. So really while Western Union is not the ideal solution - it is still for the time being often the only solution.

Have to agree. I hate WU so much that I get angry every time I see a WU signboard on the road. But still, in some cases, WU is the only option, and I am forced to use it. Really hope that BTC will soon emerge as an alternative.

during one of those rallies ( I think it was about a year ago) WU said they were planning to start working with bitcoin.
It cause another big jump in price ... but that was it. I haven't heard of that since.

Much worse than paypal. I had to send a 100 euro payment to someone a few countries away, and the fee was 25 euro. I asked the lady (since it was my first time) why the fee was so high. Her answer was: because of the speed.  Roll Eyes

Does she think that Western Union is faster than Bitcoin?  Grin

Sending small amounts of money using Western Union is a headache. There was an instance when I had to urgently send $20 to someone in Guyana (A trade deal gone bad.... the guy wasn't satisfied with the first payment. Threatened to give me a negative feedback). I don't remember the fees exactly, but they charged more than the amount which I sent to my friend.
I don't think that she even knows what Bitcoin is. If i asked here: have you tried bitcoin?
She would probably made a weird face and be like: what, is that some kind of food?  Cheesy
I'll probably never deal with WU again.
