I think DOGE is a great example of what an altcoin can achieve. Most altcoins are still young -- where was Bitcoin 4 years ago? Things may change with time.
Right now I have not seen Alt Coins offer anything but a gateway into BTC.
Some Alts have nuances in how they mine, limits to coins, transaction speed, blah blah blah. To the average main stream investor, student, non-techie human... these differences are not that interesting.
What Alternative currencies could do is come up with creative ideas on how to get crypto currencies into mainstream culture. How can an alt currency be integrated with SnapChat for example. How about someone call the CEO of SnapChat and say lets brainstorm a little....
CAN SOMEONE PUSH THE INTEGRATION ENVELOPE PLEASE!!!!
Getting an alt integrated in a useful way into our culture has to happen, without doing so these Alt coins are all doomed to fade to oblivion as they only exist as a pathway to get more Bitcoin.
