I'd say playing online gambling games in areas where it is not legal.  Looking for an investment into the economy for the future.  A place to store wealth anonymously.

my own strange reason is that i am preparing for the future when i am on the run, whether from the law, from the mob, from my nagging wife, from my soul-crushing coporate job...

i know that wherever i am in the world, anytime, without any documents, papers, need for approval, i.d., anyone else knowing...

i can access my own store of value to use and survive, with only the private key in my head.

Brain wallets have been widely criticized for being fragile and not at all tamper proof.

most people participate in the bitcoin system for one or a combination of the following majority reasons:

1. support the bitcoin ecosystem
2. speculate on future price increase
3. use it to buy drugs on silk road and other things
4. use it to avoid and circumvent government's capital control and seizure e.g. cyprus, china

but what are some strange and unconventional minority reasons outside of those listed above, that may cause people to become a bitcoin user?

an example would be a small business owner forced to pay cryptolocker's ransom.

what else?
