For me sometimes our senses is enough to determine whether a certain site is scam or not, but sometimes not.  Grin
And also, if you find it so much easier it is a scam because bitcoin is so much hard to earn nowadays. I once encounter a person saying I can earn 5 BTC for just 2 hours by doing such things which is so much easier, and he said all I need to do is invest on him, etc.. WTF!  Angry , a total scam!
That is why bitcoin is sometimes called scam here in our country because of them, and I don't like it.

In order to protect myself from them all I need to do is to understand and be careful on everything. Being careful is so much enough to escape scams in the world of bitcoin. That is all we need to do!
You said was actually true which even our commons sense and awareness would already be enough for us to determine scams. We should always remember that all things that are too good to be true high chances that they are total scams or fraud this is why we should not let ourselves to be deceived on those possible attempts which someone would able to introduce to us. Sometimes our greediness do push us to done such thing but if you do have the awareness and knowledge you can able to spot a scam on the spot. Cool

Main scams occur usually during transactions and that is because of your carelessness and impatience. Scams occur when you are so greedy that you accept an offer from buyer/seller that offers you more return but gives you short span of time. These can be avoided by having experience and proper knowledge on bitcoin and its use. And most important, you need patience.

It's everywhere. Bitcoin is a widely used currency and can be easily transacted online. And one of it's special characteristics is being anonymous in any transaction. And with that, some peopel are taking thid advantage in a wrong way. They scam people buy selling stuff and asking for Bitcoin payments. The best way to avoid such scams like this is by reading the reviews of the site and the user selling a product. Just always be careful and mindful before transacting something.
Reviews always you can buy. It is not an indicator. It seems to me that to buy goods only on trusted sites. Unfortunately they very rarely accept payment in bitcoin. You will have to buy for Fiat. If you're not greedy then the network can always find proven and reliable services for the exchange of bitcoins. I don't see a problem. People are to blame that fall into the hands of fraudsters.

It is impossible to protect yourself from scams. If you have come to the attention of professionals of the crooks then you have no chance. They always know how to find the keys to your consciousness. But fortunately these scams are very small. Most crooks primitive trapping people in their greed. If you are offered very favorable conditions it is only a Scam.

Main bitcoin scams can be some untrusted sites asking  for some investment and in return give some amazing and exciting offers .
They will come up with some message or pop-ups such as " you have won 20 btc " to win them provide your private access of your wallet . Such attempts clearly indicates that there is something wrong in them . Falling for such baits can lead to a heavy loss as you provide them with your direct access to the wallet .
Do not share your wallet details with anyone . I know "20 btc" is very tempting but turning for such temptations can be the worst turn you might ever take .

This article is really helpful. I hope newbies can get a hold to this piece of information. When I was a newbie in cryptocurrency most specifically on bitcoin, I lost at most $6000 when I entered a phising site. That was a hard way of learning by experience. So I want to advice to all that we should always be vigilant and careful to websites that we enter and don't get caught up by greediness (gambling and mining), there is no easy money out there.  Privacy and Security is also very important. Make sure that you keep your credentials safe and that it is only accessible by you.

Anyway, aside the common sense and experience in the crypto, there's no way to prevent against scams. It seems to me that scamers are becoming better and better. Stay tuned and be careful!

Agreed. I second the suggestion about not leaving any larger amounts on trading exchanges. Don't become obsessed with any project, site, scheme that might seem to make you money passively. Watch your investments and always be aware that if a site gets hacked, you probably have no recourse. I like the idea of trying different mining pools, trading platforms or novel sites. Spread it out but go slowly. If you smell trouble pull your coin out.

You just need to consider bitcoin as a normal money and whenever you are trying to go into a deal always think if the deal is fair. When the person that you are dealing with is willing to loss from that deal that only means that he is trying to scam you. Bitcoin can be converted easily and no one will agreed to have a deal that is unfair.

To determine the fraud impossible. This applies not only to bitcoin. You want to say that the market for Fiat is not a Scam? They are everywhere where the money is. In order not to fall for scams I never make a Deposit. I pay money only upon receipt of the goods. I think that this problem will be solved if there is a demand for such a service. It is not difficult.

The time when I discovered bitcoin is also the time I joined a lot of facebook groups here and there. Instead of getting more information to earn bitcoin, I stumbled upon a lot scam investment schemes. So after getting scammed I learned an important lesson which is there is no legit investment site or group in bitcoin that trully exist.

i think one of the main reason of bitcoin scams is that the value of bitcoin is very high, and for greedy people they have to get their hands on that kind of money, so they result into scamming other people, and one way to avoid this kind of incident is to educate yourself so that you will have more background towards bitcoin and you can have some countermeasures from that kind of happenings.

One more thing is that, some people are trying to scam us the old way, they send us something like "You have won XXXXXX USD and we are going to pay you in bitcoins in order to protect your privacy and save you tax." Then they ask for some Bitcoins from your end and/or your personal data (which they will misuse for their own scam purposes), never fall for such bullshit lottery schemes that ask you to claim your winnings.

I am very familiar with this kind of scam because in our country, the mobile users do not need to register their numbers unlike in other countries wherein the owners of the numbers are easier to track because it is required to register before having a mobile number. I often received a message like this saying I won in a lottery and contact a certain person usually a lawyer to talk about how to claim the price but I know better. The sad thing is that some who are desperate for money fall for it. We should always be careful with regards to our coins because many scammers are out there looking for ways to get it from our hands.

Don't you think that exchanges should also be put into the list of scammers? I know they have nothing to do with this, but we really don't know what cooks behind the scenes while they declare "hacks" or "DDoS attacks" there. Putting our funds on exchanges is a real danger, and should be added as a point to the article to complete it.

The most popular scam in the crypto world are ICOs. They have scammed millions and millions of dollars already and many of them are still existing up until now. I protect myself by not investing in any of them.

That's why bitcoin consider as risky investation so you must think very carefully before try to invest on bitcoin.
But for now bitcoin show a great value it means that bitcoin demand's getting greater from time to time especially when bitcoin will reach another fork at November mid.

So if you want profit, there will be a risk upon it !

Remember, scammers are always two steps ahead of you. They are so creative to make the new way to scam others. One way not to be scammed is to be careful not give your personal information to others, be cautious about personal surveys like what is your digital wallet, how much bitcoin do you have or any question that is not directly pertaining to your personal information, but the truth is it leads to your personal info.

Yes, they are very dangerous and really knows how to hide themselves from a deeper look. And they will also used fake reviews to make their site looks legit and suckered you in making a investment of them. Later on heaven will fall on you once you discover that you have been scammed and they took all your money. That's why I no longer invest because I have been scammed before specially at the beginning of my bitcoin journey. So you need to be careful out there. A lot of wolves prying on unsuspecting victims.

There is actually no particular way to deal with the scams . You just need to be very sure and attentive before making a deal . The scammers provides with very attractive and hard to refuse offers and return values which is the main reason why one gets caught by the scams . Also before trading make sure you trade the amount in parts so that you are sure that it is a scam or not .  There is just a need to be extra careful , smart and less acquisitive in order yo save yourself from scams.

Well Before engaging ourselves into higher level of thinking we must know first the basic of what we are going to do and also learn fundamentals.
Bitcoin is known as more precious than gold and silver, and if anybody talks about money there always come greedy person (scammers) they always take advantage to the person who is not yet knowledgeable about bitcoin so that is why there is always many person who get scammed.

Before Entering into trading and investing we should be able to discern if the site or person whom we are going to deal with is a trustworthy site or person, basic technique to distinguish scammer in this forum is their rank and trust feedback.

Surveys isnt bad as long you are not disclosing the most important informations regarding on your identity or any keys that would let them access your wallet or other things. They are always evolving creating new ways of scamming. If it seems that their methods are already been known then they will create another new one which isnt familiar to the public but we can actually avoid these stuffs if we are really serious on researching on things and keep on reading on the latest updates on possible new scams that do exist recently for you to be aware.

I agree with you 100% but I can tell you more. If you are in the area of interest fraud professionals then you will become their victim. You can avoid big losses. But to protect yourself from them is impossible. You need to keep your money in different places and never make a big investment even if the project seems promising and safe. If you decide to invest then start with small amounts that do not mind losing.

I think the best way to forestall Bitcoin-related scams is to be mindful of the sites you click on. I think it is pretty obvious to suppose if such site is a scam just by looking at it ordinarily. There is no hard-and-fast rule in making sure that you are not clicking on sites that are scams but just be wary when the site was sent/given to you by a person you do not know, by someone you know but hardly communicated to you about other things, and by someone who is a total stranger in a sense that you do not know the latter nor the latter knows you.

It's hard when you are still a newbie to crypto and very naive. I think anyone had experiences of being scammed like I do. When I got scammed, it made me very careful and I always double check everything and read other reviews first before trying any site or application.
A lot of positive feedback it can also be a sign of a Scam. You can't determine linked accounts advertise the project or not. Politicians have long used a network of bots to promote their ideas. That prevents the crooks to do well? Anyone can fall into the trap of scammers. It is a pity that because of this, many good projects have no chance because they do not believe.

I was once been victimized by such scam cloud mining and investing in that is the most regrettable mistakes I have ever done. But “experience is really the best teacher” and it makes me a better observant to those kind of sites offering something beyond the bond of reality.

I will not point all “cloud mining sites” but after those incidents I have never or will never be going back on those days. Time can only tell if this traumatic experience be healed or last for a lifetime.
Most of the proposals of cloud mining is a fraud. But you must admit you are to blame for that fall for their bait. If you are offered very favorable conditions to strangers then this is definitely a Scam. The best way to protect them is not to be greedy and to use only approved sites. But remember that the website is also tested through time may be a Scam.

You were in some point and I have accepted that I am also to blame to my situation at that time. But maybe because at that time scamming is not as dominant as now and most of high ranking now will tell you, at that time “hashocean” is one of the best and turn shutdown and bring all the investments. It was good for me before it happen and whatever we argue now, it won’t bring back what is already been gone.

I’m sad I have passed those obstacle but maybe I’ve learned the lesson and more matured on taking precautionary actions next time.

This thread is very helpful to me as a Jr. Member. I am new of this job. I want to know more about of this. I really don't want to join a campaign that is scam. So, in order to aware that the campaign is scam, i will research it, read the previews of the company that i want to join and read the background of it. Reading this furom can help me to learn a lot and to get aware of scam campaigns or a scam sites.

Usually, if there will be a low investment and has a high returned with a short period of time, that will probably a scam.
As far as i know, HYIP site has so many scam. Some of them will hack your account and and has a virus to access ypur data. Watching out for the red flags can also be helpful to get awared of scam sites.

Beware! If you are a Bitcoin user, then you must be ready to keep your Bitcoin deposits. Although security safeguards in Bitcoin are pretty tight, it does not mean that other people will not be able to deceive you.Usually the fraud that occurs involves targeting the victims who are not ready, so they eventually lost Bitcoin in his possession. In order to protect yourself from any kind of Bitcoin fraud, you need to know what the most common forms of Bitcoin deception are, for example in fake bitcoin stock exchange, Phishing Scams, Fake Bitcoin Wallets, Cloud Mining Scams and more.

The most common that I have met is something like analogue of Bitcointalk forum where you need to pay to become a participant and then you need to pay monthly payments for the use. That's the most easy and disgusting for of people's scamming, but unfortunately such sites are blossoming.
Why do you think that such sites are a Scam? They're just warning you that you will have to pay. It's not a Scam. To protect yourself from such websites very easily. Don't pay and you don't become a victim. It is much harder to get into the hands of fraudsters who hide from you their true intentions. It is very difficult.

When transacting, always be vigilant and skeptic because you'll never know if the site or person you are transacting with is still the same site or person before. Always secure your transactions and always check the sites if it is the correct URL because just a little tweak of the site may deceive your eyes not noticing that it is a phishing site. With so many airdrops and ICOs nowadays, there are some that requires a wallet download and maybe that wallet has a virus to get your data and you end up with nothing the next time you check your funds. As for investment, I would not invest to a HYIP site because I have been scam a lot of times before being a newbie so I learned my lesson well.

The best way one can protect himself best from scams related to bitcoin, is to learn from experience which I have had my own share of where I needed to convert the little coins I have gotten to cash but ended up in the hads of a scammer who used delay tactics on me but I was still immature then. But now, I just don't deal with anybody anyhow. I have a list of trusted guys to help with that and even before transacting I do a lot of ground work confirming nothing has changed since our last transaction.

No need for experiences if you already have some knowledge, still the best is to know better about awareness for scams. The one thing about scams that usually being seen and they obviously does is they make deals that are so good to be true, so it is easy to notice that it was a scam, I never been scammed before and I don't need any experiences in able to avoid being one of their victim. This blog is helpful to does who doesn't have enough knowledge and information about scams, good luck and keep it up.

I don't have any experience on scams but I have been fervently reading about the different scams out there and its nature so that I may avoid it. True enough, those who have experienced it would have an upperhand because it is said that "experience is the best teacher" however it is not exactly necessary.

I've heard about ponzi schemes, HYIPs and the like that are still present up to this very day and the best way to avoid it is to watch out for the red flags. When there is a low investment with the promise of high return in a short period time, then it is likely to be a scam. Watch out for sugarcoated and fancy promises and don't let them blind you. Most scams don't look as if they are scams at first because they are made to deceive you so always be on the look out and don't let your guard down.

Just remembering if something looks too good to be true, it probably is. There are lots of crypto-related sites claiming that they are going to give you 1% or higher daily. Sometimes as high as 20% daily. They usually disappear as fast as they appear. If you are able to achieve such wonderful returns, why the hell are you going to give them to anyone over the internet? They remind me of the typical Nigerian scam. When I think of using a website, I search about it on the internet, nowadays you can find a lot information but bear in mind that some of the info you will find is posted by the same scammers.

"Experienced is the best teacher", as they say and only at that time you will be aware what are the signs and what are those scammers are after in every clients they have. There so much good reviews about it for some reason they paid to it that's why we can't really tell until one comes your way.

The same thing can be said here in the world of cryptocurrency and online, there are things we have to follow in order not to be victimized by so many scammers and phishers and all the other evil-minded fellows just waiting around like a lion to punch on their prospective victims. Nothing beat experience though when it comes to scams...though it can be costly indeed.

There are so many scamming programs online and with the advent of Bitcoin many scammers find a new avenue to accelerate their business of fooling people. Most of the scams using Bitcoin are investment-type which turn out to be just another pyramiding or ponzi scheme. To paraphrase a popular saying, something that is too good to be true may not really be true.

Right now, the trend is  going into cryptocurrency trading. There are many sites offering guaranteed percentage of earnings and they are claiming to be in trading. While it is true that maybe some of them are telling the truth, I am sure that many are also just doing the same old ponzi thing...later on the program would just collapse at the weight of pay-outs. Ponzi means that pay-outs are just taken from pay-ins.

I have been into many scams too and I know that indescribable feeling upon realizing that your trusted program is literally gone and not paying anymore.

I have never been scammed before but ever since I joined this site, I learned about ponzi, HYPI(?) and other altcoins that are scams, and because of this knowledge I was able to avoid scams. I've read somewhere on this forum that you shouldn't deal with newbies. Not to discriminate but it is highly possible for them to trick you.

I always look out for red flags and research first before engaging on something. Thankfully, I've never been scammed or lost any money online. Just always be on the lookout!

I've heard a lot of mining sites that are scam and illegal. These site just want to get your money and after you started investing, they never pay you back. You can protect yourself from these type of scams by digging deeper. Checking the status of the sites and checking reviews from other people who has started investing. You should also consider other people's experience from these sites and be aware.

Scammers are one of the most creative and adaptive creatures in the whole world. When it was all Paypal when we talked about making money online...scammers were using Paypal to push their own selfish agenda. When Paypal started to tighten their ropes, scammers were rejoicing to know that now they can use Bitcoin and easily get away with it.

What should we do to protect our hard-earned money? You should train your nose to smell scams even from afar. Victims of many scams are already aware of these things. I am sure you don't need to be victimized to learn big lessons here...just read those horrifying scam stories and you can see how they got victimized so you can avoid the same experience.

It is all about doing your due diligence before opening your wallet and parting with your money so you can avoid tears and some heartache -- and headache as well.

Perhaps to be more selective in making payment transactions or trade and investment transactions against companies that have a bad reputation, of course including preventive action against the possibility that will happen to us from responsible party.

I think the best way to avoid Bitcoin scams is to use common sense while remembering that this is still currency. Money is money, regardless of the form, and scams dealing with money will almost always look the same.

Even being very cautious we are still in danger when dealing with Crypto-Currency online. Some menaces are easy to avoid, like the malware downloads, the Ponzi HYIP schemes (Cloud mining), but some are hard to predict sometimes, like the exchanges and investments.

There are good and reputable exchanges, but at some point they can disappear without warnings and there is nothing you can do. I know I can let my money out of there, but if I'm trading, I need to have some money there and no one knows exactly when the scam will happen.

The investments are good too, but no one know eith 100% sure if they will last forever or not, so it's always risky to join one, but necessary at same time.

The one I know that is most common is failing to deliver as promised whether its for services promised or for goods to be supplied in my own case when I want to engage in such, I will always use escrow no matter how appealing or time conscious the agreement is depement upon, I will not be too hurry and at the end of the day blame myself and then wished if only I had exercise that extra care of taking things slow.

using common sense is the best way to protect you against bitcoin or any other scams
exercise same caution online as you would offline: you do not give money to some unknown dude in a tent by the road
even if he offers you "the best price"
usually,if the offer is too good,it is likely a scam, try to deal with established companies that have good reputation (doesn't help in  case of exit scams)
do not be lazy and search the net and read about the company or site you are planning to do business with
there is a specialised site that deals with bitcoin related scams: badbitcoin.org

Don't let others control your BTC -> self custody
it's verye asy to deal with all these actually, about exchange just don't leave a big amount there, only small one for trading, against malware i have a dedicated machien that will never install anythign other than bitcoin

just be carefull to install the version from official source on bitcointalk check the checksum, i'm more worried about soemthign they didn't mention there, and it's being scammed in real life

if they know you have  bitcoin someone could murder you to steal your money....
If you're unlucky you can get screwed up anyway. You send money to an exchange with an intent to sell and withdraw, but the transaction gets stuck for a day due to network overload (spam) and you go to bed tired of waiting. On the next day you wake up, go to work, in the evening you check your balance... and boom the exchange was hacked or raided or whatever. People were sending money to gox and trading, all was fine and one day when they wanted to withdraw nothing was coming out. They messaged the support and heard that there are delays...

I'd e more afraid of someone attacking me to steal my fiat than bitcoin. Wallets are useless without a passphrase. Bitcoin still offers a much better security than cash, crooks have to blackmail or torture you to get it.

The very way easiest way to keep away from scam is not to get greedy and not too impatient. When you want to buy or sell abs someone is offering to buy from you at an unnecessary premium or in the case of wanting to buy someone is willing to sell at a discount and still making overtures to ensure you do it fast, there is likelihood it will end up in scam and there is nothing anyone can do about it. Other scams can be avoided by being extra careful.

Very informative article.

If you don't want to get scammed when using bitcoin its really easy. Use your damn common sense and don't get greedy. Because if you get greedy then you've alreday picked up the scammer's bait - they want you to be greedy so that they can work their techniques on you to suck you in further.

Since you are a bitcoin lawyer - i was wondering are you involved with suepoloniex.today at all? A lot of complaints against them recently and even that site was launched. Maybe you could reach out to help some people who lost big amounts.
