I heard YAcoin is only solo mining, how do you do that?

the yacoin thread (https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/annyac-yacoin-yet-another-altcoin-start-is-now-196196), has a link to the client.  extract it, and run the client until it updates all the blocks.  Close the client, then from a command prompt run "yacoin-qt -gen".  To check its working go to help > debug window > console > and type "gethashespersec".  if it returns >0 you're mining.  then you just wait it out.  When you hit, you get ~50 coins.

Bitcoin is Michael Jackson and the other altcoins are the Jackson 5.

A lot of them are going for faster block creation time? Is this actually better? Does it let transactions go through faster? Or do they just take up more space.

LTC is the best IMO, probably because it's most similar to BTC and has the most infrastructure of the altcoins.

Good analysis that. FTC was nice to mine for the first few days, so profitable although I got on late =[

I am having a hard time keeping up with all of the new alt coins these days.. what are the newest and best coins these days?

None of them is good enough to be the best coin. That's why they continue to multiply.

I'm fairly sure they multiply because BTC's open-source and historically, you can make a lot of BTC/USD/etc doing altcoin pump&dumps, especially if you're the first. You mine for a few weeks, create a bunch of sockpuppets to pretend people are interested, then sell at its peak, rinse & repeat. You can't really pump&dump BTC the same way, because that extreme early mining advantage has "unfairly" already been distributed. Now, many are still able to mine profitably with GPUs, but I don't think anyone's willing to spend 10x on electricity than they make at current rates -- I think that ultra-extreme volatility's done for - it's unreasonable to expect BTC to hit $2k or $2 in the next six months, and those are the kinds of price swings we saw "back in the day" and the kinds of swings altcoins see today, which is why there are a lot of speculators (the HYIP kind of speculators, I'll add) buying and selling massive numbers of these coins where able. Ultimately, I think the Bitcoin transaction "minimum" fee/bid and the new minimums being put in place will decide the price ceiling in a few years' time, and we'll probably hang around there with altcoins (especially established altcoins like Litecoin) really stepping into their role as the "silver" of Bitcoin.

/CNC FTW!!!/

I really can't see any reason for any other coin besides BTC. As far as I know, no other coin is accepted anywhere for anything. Not saying that in time, they couldn't be, but with BTC's divisibility, security and ease, what is any other coin but a hope at turning cash for a pump and dump on someone more naive?

Also, a fairly new one is BTB - aka Bitbar. Supposed to be more rare than BTC, and has in fact started trading with a value greater than BTC.  Shocked

As everyone has said, BTC is definitely the best.  But FTC (Feathercoin) is making a good showing right now, and I like it a lot too.  Still, it will certainly never be BTC.
Yeah FTC is the one I have been playing with lately

YaCoin is the newest atm, and it's still possible to solo mine it. Blocks are generated about every 2-4 seconds atm, and if you have a low latency internet connection you could find blocks. There is not yet a GPU miner for the hashing algoritm, so if you have a good CPU you should mine, my estimation on price per coin when it hits an exchange is 0.003 BTC each.

The best coin is BTC. Also, there are other coins (like LTC) that could be interesting.
