Fly to Japan, exchange at MTGOX and Fly back....just remember to declare your cash when you come back.

I took everything out of Mtgox and went with Campbx per recommendations made here in the forum. VERY happy with their service. Quick cash withdrawals through Dwolla too. Mine was processed in less than 5 minutes, UNLIKE Mtgox who takes weeks IF you're lucky. I like their live graphs for market data as well. Check it out

Is this the cheapest way to get my USD from bitcoin, besides going through an individual on otc?

I can recommend you something but it's not a website like MtGox or BitStamp. It is through the #bitcoin-otc IRC channel where you could buy/sell BTC for USD using either bank deposits, moneypak, meetup, or sometimes even PP. You can learn more on http://bitcoin-otc.com/
