NameCoin (NMC) is making big waves right now.

Went from $0.70 all the way to $3 in the past week.

BTC

coinbase.com
campbx.com (opening straight bank transfers on Nov. 27th)
bitstamp ( never personally used but it's mentioned a lot )

Those top two are the ones I use.

Others

BTC-e.com   King of exchanges that primarily deals in cryptos other than BTC ( though they have BTC). Has the largest volume by far, and the infamous 'trollbox' , a chat where where everything said is lies and deception. A coin other than BTC getting on BTC-E is a big deal for that coin.

vircurex.com    A decent exchange. Sluttier than BTC-E with more options.

mcxnow.com  Probably in-between the two listed up there. They pay interest on coins you hold in their exchange.

New exchanges

Babies, but perhaps up and coming, especially VoS.

Your best bet is acquiring BTC from coinbase or campbx or what have you, and then transferring it to one of the alt exchanges for whichever coin you'd like.

Again, join us at peercoin.net if you'd like. Pretty friendly community that's really starting to get going.

Thanks for the excellent information.  I live in the United States.  What are some good sites, or exchanges to use if I'd like to purchase various types of coins and perhaps exchange, or trade between virtual currencies?

This question is both natural but silly at the same time. People are just going to tell you the coins they hold or are biased towards. You're best off just doing your own homework.

https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/list-of-all-cryptocoins-134179  List of all coins.

http://coinmarketcap.com/  How much money is currently in each coin.

Most alt coins are not special, some of them do improve upon or add new features that BTC does not have.

Top 5 coins:

BTC - The King, the standard. Good choice for both short and medium term, but there are many talented people out there trying to take it out with a superior crypto-currency.

LTC - 2nd place coin. A lot of people are invested in it. I think it's a good choice for short possibly medium term, but I'm not sure if it will last long term due to lack of anything really setting it apart other than it's time start advantage.

PPC - 3rd place coin. Interesting natural inflation rate ( Moore's law ), original coin to add proof-of-stake, energy efficient, transaction fees are destroyed, ASIC friendly (unlike LTC). This is my biased coin  Wink  Join us at peercoin.net Smiley

Namecoin - I don't know how useful it's actual feature is, but since it's merge mined with BTC it might always follow BTC in a certain way.

Last coin changes daily, there are many battling for number 5. Primecoin, and Worldcoin are notable, Feathercoin is just LTCx4 but it has a strong following that just doesn't want to quit.

Safe bet? BTC, LTC, PPC, and 1 or 2 lesser known ones.

What are the top 5 cryptocurrencies in order?

Also, which cryptocurrencies are most likely to stand the test of time?

Which do you think is a good investment right now?
