My guess would be exchanges and then the rest in this order:

bitstamp, btc-e, coinbase, blockchain.info mywallet, bitcoin core, multibit

There is no better than an default wallet in terms of security.

I think what Bitcoin's main idea was the idea of doing peer-to-peer transactions. That being said, any desktop wallet isn't exactly the way to go for me. I see desktop wallets as my "bank". Enter Verso cards, these are neat cards with QR codes and a companion app (iOS) so you can do transactions on the go... On the other hand, you can keep it at home and acts as a cold storage wallet.

Bitcoin Core is probably the most popular because it incorrectly assumed to be "the default wallet".  The wallet that's best for you depends on what you want to use it for.  I personally use both Bitcoin Core and Multibit.  If your looking for an offline wallet Armory is a good place to start.
