It's just software doing math incorrectly. I have seen it report double or half of my hashrate in the dashboard, but the number of shares accepted and payout are always correct.
One time I flipped my difficulty on BTC Guild to 256, it got a few shares and said my hash rate was over 7GH. All from a little block erupter =)it's all based on the shares you submit on their end. Your machine is reporting more accurately.

after a while it will even out and get closer to your actual hashrate.

Their page is just guessing at your hashrate based on how fast you are submitting shares.
If you are unlucky, and find fewer than average shares, they will report a lower hashrate, if you are lucky, and find more shares than average, they will report higher hashrate.
Over the long term, it should average out.
