Money and trust do not make good bed partners, never have and never will. Trust have a way of going out the window as and when the amount of money increases.

Best is to be your own bank i.e. operate in an environment of zero trust. Setup your own wallet over which you have full control of your wallet and all private keys contained inside that wallet. Only 'trust' these companies and or exchanges with what you are willing to lose so if they do go tits up that you are not wiped out. Best practice is to leave coins with them for as short a time as possible in order to decrease your exposure to the bare minimum.

Only person you should trust with your financial well being is yourself.

There's a thread listing a lot of companies that have failed.

This leads me to wonder what company out there can you trust?

Also what bitcoin exchanges do you feel would be safe for US or Europeans to use for the purchase and storage of bitcoins?

For the purchase purpose , there is planty of them like Bitsamp , Kraken , Circle , BTC-E , Coinbase , Localbitcoins and a lot of others however for what comes to the storing your BTC , it's probably not the best idea someone could do honestly , You should consider taking Desktop wallet as Electrum or if you have high amounts then you should go with Hardware (expensive) or Paper wallets (cheap , just print)

I am a trader too but don't trust any exchange...I just trust my wallet where I have my private key paper wallet backup so money will be 100% in my control and I don't have to worry about that anymore
