Airdrop could be  a free money for doing certain things  for them. Like, you could promote their coins, then they would give you free coins.

An airdrop is the distribution of coins at no cost. It's essentially a giveaway offered to those who register for it.

Airdrops are used to spark interest for a new coin but as well to encourage involvement by the community.

Airdrops also offside the miningprocess which is the more usual way to obtain coins, besides buying. This may upset miners but they can participate in the airdrop so everyone is treated equal in regards to the distribution of the coin

That is free money

No one wants to upset the miners that could be the end of a new coin!!!!

No no no...
Basically a coin and doing an airdrop usually always mined all of their coin,
which mean they have 90%++ from total supplay, and they give it away to people as a giveaway for joining the community or showing some interest in their coin.
not only that, many people(not new coin or developer) doing an airdrop aka 'GIVEAWAY' for people who's meet their criteria such as if you're registered under his affiliate he will give you money or coin .this is called AIR DROP

so in conclucion,an airdrop will not make a miner upset because it's free and only some small project that mined by the developer for less than 70% and the rest can be mined by the miner.but that won't make the miners feel upset because they know about it and most likely they know the consequences if the developer runing away

For example if i own a Altcoin, i could provide senior members with 1,000,000 coins so they promote the coin for example?

You can decide who you want to give it to. The more fair the distribution, the better.

But this would generally be done by the developers who created the coin, not by some holders like you & me. But if you want to do it for promoting some specific coin, you can.

ANother example of AirDrop is a recent project from Stellar Lumens creators. They are distributing 16 billion Lumens to Bitcoin holders just like that.
If you are Bitcoin holder and want to receive free Lumens just visit this page for more info: https://www.stellar.org/blog/bitcoin-claim-lumens-2/
This type of incentive and promotional event is starting to be industry trend among altcoins developers.

Hi All,

I see many post comment about Airdrop. What is an Airdrop?

thanks

Some people are willing to give you free coins if you meet a certain criteria decided by them. This free distribution is called Airdrop.

For examples, some months ago the developers of CLAM coin decided to give free CLAM to everyone who own Bitcoins. The amount of free CLAM you get was based on the amount of BTC you own. That was an airdrop.
