Altcoin season is just a hope of repeating the past glory. That altcoin season was driven by blockchain and ICO hype as well as the growth of Bitcoin. Basically, investor thought that since Bitcoin is growing. Altcoin season means that alts grow faster than BTC during a bull run . because there is no way to explain why both Bitcoin and altcoins would be growing at the same time. And lastly, the usual scenario where Bitcoin would stop and altcoins will take over might not happen, because it is very clear that more attention is still on Bitcoin.
I think this time around it was more about defi, because there are so so so many defi projects and weirdly enough this time around it is not just a project that people invest and hope the price goes up neither, it is a project that "people have the ownership" and that is the deal here, and it doesn't end with the funding process. Back in 2017 period when ICO was a big deal, most people just bought those coins, funded them, got it for cheap and waited for the price to go up and then sold their coins and made a profit and that was the whole reason ICO existed, so that investors would make money.

Nowadays defi is much bigger, it is something that keeps on living, for example uniswap? That is still having a ton of people trading there, even after publishing and being released it is still used so much whereas most ICO coins were done in a year (most). So that is why people assume this could be different.

Whales drive the alt season. They sold part of their BTC to pump the altcoins. Once they meet targets the alt season will be over and what we hold will be writting off losses.

We see Grayscale having added many more altcoins in Trusts, yet the interest in them is not even close to Bitcoin. So, it is not institutions buying Litecoin, Stellar, Bitcoin Cash, ETC, and the rest.

Most likely the media, since recently there has been a lot of various news that have been related to bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, and most of these news has been very positive towards cryptocurrencies, and therefore when people see some incredible news that are directly related to cryptocurrencies, then they immediately start investing in cryptocurrencies and of course this also applies to big players and therefore altcoins immediately begin to rise in value.

I've been seeing lots of posts here and on twitter about altcoin season.  But other than a backward-looking phrase (that's not useful for forward trades), what is alt season?  Are there times when alts pump and, crucically, we can predict alts will pump even more?  Or is it purely "hindsight is 20/20" way of looking coin prices?
You should not listen to them, they just fooled you honestly. Because we don't have the alt season yet, only a few altcoins did the pump while the many are still resting. If you are now planning to invest in altcoins, have to start it now before the train goes off.

If you are talking about the tweet of Elon Musk, it was just Dogecoin make a hype, not all altcoins. So now, before the other will do the hypes, make it to start or you missed something later. This will be risky advice and it's up to you, anyway.

Altcoin season is real, it always happens when bitcoin reach a new max level in value and btc dominance start going down, right now altcoins are not really in bullish mode because bitcoin dominance is still very high, whales also have a part to play in altcoin seasons, when they get enough roi from Bitcoin at ATH they will move funds out of btc and into altcoins

Money and ignorance are starting to drive bitcoin's bull run, leading to the rise of altcoins.

And see what happens when bitcoin plummets?
They will be leaving the altcoins and back again to the bitcoin. this is also happening a few years ago but the situation is a bit different compared a few years ago coz this time the institutional investors have been making it different.

We can say that now we are seeing a light version of the altseason. It seems to me that coins with a not very high market capitalization will show a special growth. Dogecoin after recent events has already moved into the category of large coins and even entered the top 10. Let's see who's next in line.

Actually, there don't have any specific session for pumping the atlas coins. This market is totally unpredictable at all.So, If I clear more about the marker and blockchain technology, then It would be better  to say this forex trading based is on patience and intellectuality because a coin when will be pumped and how long later don't have any ideas about this matter, but there have statistics. So that we can make a prediction just.

also on twitter too ? woah i didnt thought that alt season topic will be that popular that it will go beyond this forum but is that could be a sign that altcoin season are really coming ? because why will people talk about it so much in the first place ? its like they are fomoing it .

they give early signs or warnings for people to enter before it begins . it is more easier to predict if an alt will pump more not than predicting if when will the alt season come but to answer if what drives alt season i wont say its btc but its the demand done by the masses .

But other than a backward-looking phrase (that's not useful for forward trades), what is alt season?
In trading, back-testing is VERY important. You made it sound like it isn't in your comment. In law, precedence is what we call it and it's also important in deciding cases. In real life issues, we say that, "History has a way of repeating itself." All that is what the "backward-looking phrase" does.

Now, back to the issue at hand. What drives alts season is an aftermath of a Bitcoin rally. Investors will easily pull profit from Bitcoin rally when they think it has been exhausted and splash it on alts they think will give them quick ROI. By so doing FOMO sets in and the mad rush begins for any altcoin at all. Those who know why they're buying and those who don't know why they're buying will all join in the mad rush and price will skyrocket.

According to some of the member here in the forum, the bull run for altcoins will only be happen once the bull run is done for Bitcoin.
Assuming the bitcoin bull run is done, does that means when the altcoins turn into bull the price of Bitcoin will go down in the market?
Or it will remain higher to altcoins in terms of price value.

What they call alt season is a certain period of time in which majority of the altcoins' prices are really rising high. Right now, it is not considered alt season even if some altcoins are in green such as Stellar (XLM) and Cardano (ADA). During alt season almost all of the top altcoins are flying. For now, it seems the market is neither Bitcoin nor altcoin season. We are in a correction phase.

What primarily drives an alt season is an overall bullish crypto market or Bitcoin funds shifting to altcoins.

Altcoin is based on Ethereum and After seeing Ethereum pump up on ATH I haven't seen Altcoins going pump. Maybe investors don't have look to wards altcoins or higher gas prices so expensive that it affects the price increase of Altcoin
but we'll see in the next month whether there will be developments or Altcoins are completely unaffected by the prices of Bitcoin and Ethereum.

If I said greed what do you think?

I've been in this market for quite some time and have also made money in the market from all the performances around it that i have encountered. I don't want to call it exactly, as i think those are more of a trigger for alt season. However, newcomers to this market do not get these things, everyone participating in the dark so the definition of the season is for fishing Smiley .

Altcoin season means that alts grow faster than BTC during a bull run. This happened only one time - the 2017 bull run. Since then Bitcoin dominance had stabilized and altcoin season is just a hope of repeating the past glory. That altcoin season was driven by blockchain and ICO hype as well as the growth of Bitcoin. Basically, investor thought that since Bitcoin is growing, they should look for undepriced assets with similar properties, so nearly all alts received a pump.

Today's market is not like in 2017, there's no hype about decentralization and platforms and all that stuff, Bitcoin is finally viewed as a hedge against inflation like Bitcoiners theorized since the beginning.

I was curious about this too, I'm not sure if the alt seasons were just a coincidence before or it usually happens after the downfall of the Bitcoin? I was planning to sell some of my Bitcoins and buy some altcoins or it was not a good idea?

With Bitcoin's recent surge in price, some people in the cryptocurrency space began to wonder whether the short-lived Alt Season was coming to an end. After all, many of the astounding gains being made by alts coincided with Bitcoin's two-month uncharacteristic lack of volatility. It seemed that traders were looking elsewhere to make large profits.

if new big money failed to enter altcoins I wonder where the pump will come from

Yes that is the way that bull happen. Bull don't come just like that without no factor pushing it. When the whales decide to leave out the big coins and start buying more of altcoins, then the bull will happen and pulling out, become the bear. This is simply most of how it fluctuates. This time is a bull run for bitcoin hitting $42k, we can expect bull for altcoins soon .
You have a point here but yet it looks like we have to rely on whales making the move for us than depending on bitcoin market, right now I expect Ethereum to have reached 3000$ but it looks like whales arent really into altcoins for now, we only have to wait and see what happens in coming weeks

All we can do is make guesses here and there, this bull season isn't like what we've seen in the past that's why I believe things can be different this time around, big whales also have a part to play in every altcoin season I believe, if new big money failed to enter altcoins I wonder where the pump will come from

This might be difficult to answer correctly, because normally for altcoin season to start, Bitcoin dominance needs to drop, and this drop would mean that funds are now migrating from Bitcoin to Altcoins, this will also put a stop to Bitcoin growth while causing it to keep dropping in price while altcoins keeps rising. But nowadays, we are experiencing a different thing altogether, that is, although Bitcoin price is still rising, altcoins are also on the rise with it at least we have seen the growth of top coins like Ethereum. Therefore, I think what controls the market is institutional investors who are after their desired coins in addition to Bitcoin as well, because there is no way to explain why both Bitcoin and altcoins would be growing at the same time. And lastly, the usual scenario where Bitcoin would stop and altcoins will take over might not happen, because it is very clear that more attention is still on Bitcoin, therefore invest the best way you can but be wise about it.

The longer I follow the cryptocurrency market, the more I get the feeling that the market is run by the big players in collusion. In 2017-18, at least the information background was adjusted to the collapse of the market. Now the market is dropping by 20 percent for no reason, because the big players decided to take profits. It's the same with the altseason - many large ones have left Bitcoin now, perhaps they will start pumping Ethereum or small projects. Everything will end as before, the big ones will earn a lot and the market will collapse for a couple of years.

Altcoin seasons are driven by speculation and hype, nothing more, when you see the price of bitcoin going up for the most part there is a fundamental reason for it to happen, in 2017 it was because the segwit update was finally implemented despite the opposition of the miners, and the current rally is being impulsed by institutional investors coming to the market because they are losing trust in fiat currencies, but altcoin seasons happen just because of speculation and they can happen while there is a bitcoin bull run but they can also begin on their own when a new way to get money or a supposedly new technology emerges.
Please allow me to repeat with small edit "Altcoin or bitcoin seasons "are driven by speculation and hype", more correct to generalize it as that. People in the market have different types: investors, speculators, traders and they all want to get more money back from their initial capital.

Ridiculously, the market don't mind who are in the market and what they want to do in or earn from a market. It only operates with its own rule (that can be manipulated) and redistribute the wealth (the capital) from the most to the least members. It is true for any financial market (stocks, real estates, gold, crypto market).

There is capital flow in the crypto market and it switches periodically from bitcoin to altcoins and altcoins will have their seasons. In middle of 2019, there was a season for DeFi tokens (they are altcoins but are new altcoins). I am waiting for another season for old altcoins in 2021.

Altcoin season is the season for altcoin to be pumped massively, it says that whole of altcoins will be on the bullish trend.
We can't predict the altcoin pump but it already happened since bitcoin has pumped so hard. The pump of altcoin will also depend on the bitcoin.
Bitcoin is the only reason that was driving the altcoin pump. I see no reason other than it considers when bitcoin pumps and this will give a massive impact on the altcoin market. you should have learned about the correlation between altcoin and bitcoin.

Knowing prices when its already there but to know on what it would like or what would happen ahead then its never been known and this is what makes this market unpredictable.
Lots do call out about altcoin season but this isnt really happening as of this moment as the market do mainly focus with bitcoin and some top alts in the market.
Those low caps doesnt really get some attention but at least some of them did really have some small percentage rise but doesnt really indicate that this is an altcoin season.
The market had focused mainly on the king of crypto itself and this isnt something that we had seen in 2017. What drives alt season? It always matter on the demand and interest.

The only prediction that we can give for the altcoin season coming is every after bitcoin's bullish turn. That's the cycle that we've seen before and that season is the pump for altcoins. You may have noticed that it did pump after bitcoin got into $42k and turned low after it has hit that ATH. You can predict as much as you can in alts, there's nothing wrong in predicting as it's just a guess for the price which or which not shall happen anytime soon.
