Correct, you cannot yet bet on the Ethereum network with real currency. The test net is just like the live net - same code and everything, just no one mines on it and its currency is worthless... you can bet there to play around with the mechanics of it and that is where they are putting it through its paces to work out any bugs.

Aweomse, thank you! Is there any specific ETA for when we will see Augur roll out live? Or is 'sometime later this year' all that anyone knows at this point in time?

It just so happens I looked around on their web site the other day and I saw nothing on their blog or elsewhere other than beta release from a while back. They seem to have a lot of speaking engagements scheduled soon, if you want to guess about one of those being a launch announcement, that might not be crazy.

I guess I was wrong. However, they are at least updating their blog with development info now, and not just speaking engagements. Maybe that is progress?

The betting system was supposed to be launched years ago. Good to see there is at least some progress taking place, but still really bummed out about the lack of fruition- even a full year later. I might invest myself in the system if/when it's finally finished. Just gotta wait and see, I guess.

They get too much money.

Pick any 10 people off the street and give them $1million each.  9 out of 10 of them will fly to Barbados and spend the next two years burning through it on hookers and coke. No wait, it's probably more like 99 out of 100... or higher.

9 out of 10 businesses fail.

The 1 out of 10 that are successful usually worked so hard to get there that they won't give it up easily. Very few people get to this point. And they weren't given handouts.

It's not just Augur is it. How many of these projects do you think will actually push through the finish line. It's going to be less than 1 in 10.

That means you're going to need to ten-fold your money if you luck it and invest in a successful project. If you sell at 100% or 200% profit you just shot yourself in the foot with a sawn-off shotgun cause that's not where the money is made.

It is live and functioning on the test net. They are mostly polishing and getting better UI in place in prep for a launch later this year.

Honestly, a lot of these customer facing DApps need the massive Mist browser update coming in Metropolis to be meaningful.

Ya man, WTF is going on with Augur after 18 months.

Betting on a binary outcome is not exactly new or rocket science...
And the last time I looked at the Augur "test net" site (a month ago)... it looked like something you could wip up in a hackathon.

Oh well, another $50 million down the drain...
For a gambling site planned by some 20 somethings that seem to know nothing about the gambling world...
And think semantics like "prediction markets" and "wisdom of crowds" will shield them from US anti-gambling laws.

I'm not sure if referencing Mist (or what today is called Ethereum Wallet 0.7.3) is helpful...
Since even the latest build is bug-ridden and clunky (I run 2 of them continuously, with or without GETH)...
It has trouble finding peers and staying connected to the network with no solutions in sight.

Basically, starting with Homestead ETH, etc...
I have yet to run anything produced by Ethereum Group that was reliable and user-friendly...
Say, on the order of the Top 10,000 free, reliable shareware apps you can download.
If ANY shareware app behaved as badly as official Ethereum software... I would instantly uninstall it.

Augur could still be the big loser here...
If Roger Ver puts some financial muscle behind Hivemind... look out.

Sorry- I'm not the most technical person around these parts. I think I understand what you are saying, but I'm not exactly sure. To clarify in laymen's terms: it's currently being tested and should be released later this year, but the Reputation tokens (I think that's what they are called) and actual betting cannot currently be used/executed?

There was huge hype of Augur this past year (moreso on /r/bitcoin), but it's died down as of recently. Last I heard, it was supposed to be up and running right about now. Anyone know what the current state is? I was intrigued by the concept (but did not invest) and would like to gamble on it some day.

For those who don't know, Augur is essentially a decentralized prediction market.
