The idea for namecoin came from "BitDNS" which was started in IRC channel... Satoshi like the idea of being able to have proof of work in DNS and suggested adding some PoW ties to DNS and mining bitcoin. However, it took on a life of its own and became namecoin (NMC). Back in 2010 DNS and the registry of ownership for domains had a much larger attack surface but these days, DDoS and other types of attacks are more common, so NMC and BitDNS haven't been all that popular with the tech community at large.
But am i right to say that these .bit domains cannot actually work as real websites? I made the mistake of buying a .bit domain once thinking it could be made into a website, but apparently not.. so actually what's the use of the domain?
