You may see the github link given by bob. That would be helpful to follow up the update when the next version of blockchain has been launched.

There won't be a next 'version' of the blockchain.
There currently is a blockchain. Thats a chain of blocks. This blockchain is immutable.
This means there won't be any changes made to the blocks inside the blockchain. Only new blocks can be added.

The github link (https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin) is for bitcoin core (the '#1' full node client to access the bitcoin network).
This is independend from the blockchain. You can ignore any changes made to bitcoin core and communicate with the bitcoin network using your own client.

Although this is true vast majority of times, sometimes hard forks do happen in Bitcoin.
In the early days there were some bugs in the software and a hard fork needed to happen to correct it.

This was very early though, so there wasn't much of panic when blockchain reorganized. I assume no one really cared that much as Bitcoin wasn't worth what it is today.

I do not think we will see the blockchain 3.0 with the help of hard fork mate. These both are from the different variant of updation on blockchain. When the hard fork falls we see the increase the block size on blockchain with the help of segregated witness.
Many shit hard fork done so far. When the time of November and December many has been falls but very few are recognized one dude.

I've been reading this: https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin/blob/master/doc/release-process.md

I presume that the update wouldn't do anything much to the blockchain?

And it's basically just updating mainly how bitcoind works?

It is just the update of the full node wallet of Bitcoin Core.

Bitcoin Core, or any other wallet, are just interfaces to access the blockchain.

Correct. The blockchain is 'just' an immutable distributed ledger with records of transactions.
It is not a piece of software.

Yes. https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin is the official github of the bitcoin core client.
