Altcoins are the alternative cryptocurrencies launched after the success of Bitcoin. Generally, they project themselves as better substitutes to Bitcoin. The success of Bitcoin as the first peer-to-peer digital currency paved the way for many to follow.

It just means 'crypto coins other than Bitcoin'. There are hundreds of crypto coins out there, each having their own unique features.

Altcoin - is an alternative cryptocurrency (Bitcoin alternative).Most of them were written in the same code.
You can earn by taking part in the campaign of signature or avatar. (as an option)

but in short, altcoins are alternative+coins also known as alternative cryptocurrency which are altenate to bitcoin. you can mine and also trade them on different exchanges just like bitcoin (mining has many differences though).
generally since it is an open source community anybody can copy bitcoin or other altcoins code and make changes to them, or even start their own new project based on others and create a new coin.
